WELCOME to East Lothian Intergenerational Network
As we all embrace another new calendar year it seems like the ideal time to think about what is a community - and what does it mean to ensure everyone feels like they belong within it, are valued within it. Is there true participation - and do all feel they can contribute to it?
With the network seasonal goodwishes sent just before Christmas, we shared the powerful words by David Whyte below.:
If we reflect on this....and we encourage you to do that....(make a cuppa, get away from distractions and write down some key thoughts / doodles or words that come to mind as you let this percolate)...... then think about two pathways:
How do I want other people to bear witness to me?
How do I bear witness to others in my community, not just those in my inner circle?
Once you have identified some thoughts about 1 & 2 - try 3 & 4
What positive difference would this make?
Who can support or work with me to achieve these?
Remember to think about this in an intergenerational framework.
With Chinese New Year also here - the Year of the Rabbit, we hear this is another great reason to be reflective with energy being focussed on calm, peace, mercy, with strong artistic and creative links as well as prosperity. Seems a wonderful recipe for intergenerational connections - and learning about different cultures is always such a lovely way to share together and get to know each other.
Additional Resources suggestion
It also links to something really important - how do we tell our stories to each other?
This is at the heart of who we are, how we relate to each other and build from superficial connection to deep connection. Storytelling, sharing, understanding, respect and liking all grow from sharing who we are and bearing witness to each other.
To consider how to use storytelling, and it's natural companion "play" as ways to connect intergenerationally throughout whole lifespans, you might find this suite of resources helpful from GWT and Play Scotland.
TOP TIP
Stories support sharing of aims, methods and impact, so record and share as much as you can.

Time to Talk Day is just around the corner - 2nd February
This is another great opportunity to kickstart meaningful intergenerational work around just making the time to talk to one another, and the benefits that come from mixing age groups up and ensuring we all have the chance to contribute to our communities.
The focus of Time To Talk Day is mental health and wellbeing. We know sharing time, talking to each other and feeling like we belong and are connected to those around us makes an incredible difference.
Maybe there is a new parent, or someone recently diagnosed with a health condition and having to come to terms with a lifestyle change. Perhaps a neighbour several doors along has retired, changed jobs or someone else has been bereaved or had a relationship breakdown - perhaps older children move out and 'empty nest' has become a reality - perhaps something as simply as an injury or post-operative period and unable to take part in a regular hobby / see friends there could be impacting on someone's wellbeing significantly or recently moving to a new location and losing the benefits of a familiar place and people.
All of those indicate major changes for individuals to have to accept and adapt to - but many others may feel lonely, anxious, shy, rushed and miss out on chats and getting to know their neighbours - or perhaps they may be the perfect person to help get an idea actioned with and would love to join you in a particular activity / plan! Don't forget care homes and sheltered housing, new families with little English and those with disabilities or conditions which mean that they are not able to get around as they used to ..... so many opportunites, so why not make "Time to Talk" and keep it going throughout the year? Lots of resources available on their website too.
Enjoy!
