WELCOME to East Lothian Intergenerational Network
The recent local network meeting for East and Midlothian (GWT Network) was held in Volunteer Midlothian offices and hosted by Loreen in her role as volunteer co-ordinated.
We shared backgrounds and interests in intergenerational work throughout the morning with some really inspiring seeds planted by Carey. Carey is involved in two intergenerational community garden projects and has been involved in a 3rd.
One is work related - and recently swept the floor at the Volunteer Midlothian Awards. The community garden was instigated to support children who were facing challenges, particularly with attending school and likelihood of negative destinations ahead. As youth worker, Carey was keen to support the young people and inherited the garden project. Of course, it soon came to light that other support and help was needed with the garden as it was outside Carey's level of expertise. FABULOUS - that led to Carey soliciting help from local people, starting with a gardening enthusiast in nearby church. As different needs came up, so did different adults - and the group gelled, grew and tended to the work needed. Skill share grew organically too - and everyone benefits.
The success and enjoyment of the group led Carey to also volunteer in another community garden in her own time through Sustaining Dunbar, and create an intergenerational project at Belhaven Hospital with pupils from Dunbar Grammar and residents of the care facility. That led to her existing project, The Beehive Garden, at Dunbar Nursery. Well done Carey - it was fantastic to hear about all the benefits and relationships supported through these projects in addition to the climate action taken!
Lots of discussion followed about other community gardens and when these can be considered truly intergenerational, or currently sitting with potential to become intergenerational.
for new garden developing at Musselburgh Library and involving the intergenerational project at Musselburgh Meeting Centre, amongst others.
and - Hilary, who has co-ordinated the East Lothian Walking Festival, is keen to explore walking routes to visit community gardens around the county too.
