There was a time that necromancy was viewed as honorable and pious. It provided the living with a simulated opportunity to embrace their deceased loved ones once again as though blood still pumped through their veins. Sadly, as the art of necromancy became further refined it became clear that such methods could be used for more nefarious purposes. Goshnar most notoriously advanced his powers for evil, spoiling the reputation of all necromants no matter their intentions. Necromancy as a whole was quickly vilified and banned throughout the kingdom. The Nightmare Knights made it their priority to purge Goshnar from the world of Dura. The remainder of the Brothers were similarly chased out of mainland Dura by a kingdom prejudiced against their art. The satellite colony of Drefia harbored no such prejudice, and provided sanctuary for the Brotherhood. Here, Drefia was poised to become truly great. With the aid of the Efreet, our city burgeoned.
While many of the original Brothers remained loyal to Goshnar, Gha'Khor led a separatist faction seeking to escape persecution on the main continent. After many moons of wanderings, he and the Brothers settled amongst the city of Drefia. In the early days of the settlement, the Brothers met and practiced only under the cover of nightfall and in secrecy. They operated normal businesses and worked the trades as would any normal citizenry of the realm. Were Drefia immediately known as a bastion of necromancy, the kings' guard would likely have been dispatched to cleanse such a stain from the realm. Agents of the Nightmare Knights may too have made such a venture. Instead, the Brotherhood bided its time and honed its skills. As Drefia began to grow, Gha'Khor explored the neighboring sands in search of resources and potential recruits. It was then that he came across a young Bedouin boy, who would later become known as Gha'Zuul. Gha'Zuul grew up on the periphery of Darashia but grew to disdain the exploitative forces of the Kazaan. Gha'Zuul witnessed the unjust execution of his parents who were blamed for the robbery of a small trade caravan. Gha'Khor's offer of necromantic training proved too tempting for Gha'Zuul to refuse, as he had hoped to reunite with his parents no matter the cost.
Gha'Zuul's lust for knowledge was insatiable, as he absorbed unique and novel information from every Brother with whom he practiced. Under the tutelage of Gha'Khor, Gha'Zuul was formally inducted into the Brotherhood of Bones. Eventually, Gha'Zuul had fully mastered all of the talents the Brotherhood could offer, he sought to explore magics of further mystical beings. Shortly thereafter, we believe Gha'Zuul traveled to Mal'ouquah in search of the Efreet. It is there that he secretly swore a blood pact with Malor and pledged to assist the Efreet in their feud with the Marid. This was the price he paid to receive their tutelage. In the years following, Gha'Zuul shared little of his dealings with the Efreet, but he was known to wander the continent on mysterious missions. In exchange for Gha'Zuul's ongoing services, the Efreet also helped conjure and ornament the towers of Drefia. Drefia quickly grew from a discreet hamlet to a burgeoning metropolis. Some spires of Drefia rose so tall they protruded above the peaks of the Kha'zeel, sparkling in splendor to travelers across the continent. With time, Malor's requests grew more and more grandiose... Malor insisted that Gha'Zuul conscript the Brotherhood to aid the Efreet in their ambitious goals of continental conquest. Malor's apparent goal was to exterminate the Marid and raise Ankrahmun to the ground in the process. Gha'Zuul could not deny his mystic patron... and obliged. He recruited several of his most trusted Brothers to join in the cause.
Many of the Brothers followed Gha'Zuul across the sands, in satisfaction of his pledge. The Marid were not as weak as expected and were not ill prepared. They had rigidly fortified the city of Ankrahmun. As the battle raged, the fabric of the land began to tear as opposing energies twisted and clashed. Scorching hellfire erupted across the land, irreversibly reducing the great gardens of the Kha'labal to a cinder. In a turn of ill fortune, the winds assisted the Marid and Ankrahmunian mages in guiding the hellfires toward Drefia. Gha'Zuul had hoped that the high peaks of the mountain range would shield his new home city from storms birthed in the Kha'Labal; the momentum of the flames quickly extinguished this hope. Despite Gha'Zuul's miscalculation, the Brotherhood had long known they were not without enemies and had planned for the possible emergence of such an existential threat. Those remaining in Drefia implemented a plan to preserve the safety of their society.
As the Marid's hellfire crested over the Kha'Zeel and began its descent toward Drefia, the remaining necromancers initiated their fail-safe plan. The Brothers of Drefia linked arms and consciousness in a united ritual, channeling their collective energy to raise the sands of the city in a swirling vortex. The tornado-like shell shielded Drefia amid the eye of the sandstorm and staved off imminent incineration. While the plan succeeded, it came at a great cost. As the sands again settled, many of the structures of Drefia were almost completely buried. Completely excavating the city was a nigh impossible task. Ever since, the Brothers of Drefia reside at largely subterranean locations, shielded from the sun's touch and other hostile magics of the desert.
