As children enter their school age years, they will begin to start gaining exposure to other children their age and developing friendships (for some, this might be one of the first times they are playing with other children their age!). As many of us know, an important part of building friendships at any age is knowing how to take turns with others. For children, this can look as simple as taking turns while playing games or speaking out in class! Below are some ways you can begin to reinforce the idea of turn-taking at home.
Play board games together! Candyland, Bingo, and Uno are some great options!
Play Jenga or Tumbling Blocks. This is a great game to teach both turn-taking and emotional regulation when the tower tumbles!
Some other games that practice turn-taking: Duck Duck Goose, Hide and Seek, or Go Fish.
Try baking or cooking together! Practice turn-taking by alternating who gets to add in the next ingredient/perform the next action.
