Overview

In the kindergarten classroom, your child might be given some free time to “read” independently or look at the pictures of a favourite book. The emphasis for this milestone is not on the reading itself, but on sitting quietly and independently to enjoy the experience of looking through a book.

Explicit Practice: Sitting to “read” independently

• Encourage quiet play or reading time throughout your day.

• If this is challenging for your child, try setting them up with familiar books and encourage your child to look at the pictures.

• Model the behaviour yourself!

• Try introducing "family reading time" to your routine.
