The first days of school are often tough for both parents and children, especially after spending a lot of time together all summer long.
Watch this video to help prepare you and your child for the first days of Kindergarten:
Over the summer, create opportunities for your child to spend time with other adults, even for brief periods of time.
Practice your goodbye routine when you are leaving your child. This may include a hug, a familiar phrase, or a special wave, so your child knows you are leaving once this routine occurs.
Read The Kissing Hand, or other books included in the videos below, and explicitly talk about any concerns your child may have about going to school in a reassuring manner.
Bring your child to the school on a few occasions before the first day to familiarize yourself with the school yard.
Be encouraging, calm, confident on the first day (even if you are feeling the opposite).
Give your child a token such as a sticker or a painted rock for them to keep with them and remind them you will be back to pick them up before they know it!
When leaving your child, say goodbye with confidence and encouragement, and head out without lingering or sneaking away.
