In class, your child might be given some free time to “read” independently and flip through the pages of their favourite book. Flipping through or turning the pages of a book can be quite difficult as the papers are often thin and delicate and the task requires slow control. Below are some helpful ways you might begin working on gently turning the pages of a book with your child.
Practice together! Read a book to your child and encourage them to help flip the page. Remind them to take their time and to pinch the paper using the pads of their fingers.
Play a sorting game. Place a bunch of colourful pieces of construction paper onto your table or floor and ask your child to sort them by colour. This will encourage them to understand the feeling of lifting and moving papers without the restriction of the papers being bound together.
Practice with stickers! Peeling and sticking helps to build those muscles, incorporate sticker or tape into your arts and crafts. You can also overlap some pieces of tape and ask your child to peel them back slowly without ripping!
