Between the ages 3 and 5, children begin to refine their skills and move from using their whole arm to scribble or colour, to using their wrist and fingers which allows for more control. This control leads to the ability to colour in the lines, as well as promotes basic writing skills.
Provide lots of opportunity to practice colouring! However, it is not necessary to explicitly tell your child to colour within the lines, as this could make the activity feel very tedious and take away the fun.
Prior to starting the colouring, with your child, use stickers to border the edges of a basic shape they are planning on colouring. This draws attention to the boundaries and will provide input when your child colours over the sticker.
If you have not yet taken a look at the other Fine Motor milestones, browse for other activity ideas that will help your child build the control and strength needed for this skill.
