Self regulation is the ability to monitor and manage your feelings, behaviours, and energy levels. Learning this skill is important and often challenging for children, but is an essential skill for success in Kindergarten, in school, and in life.
The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to teach self-regulation by categorizing the different ways we feel. The program provides strategies for children to become more aware and independent in controlling their emotions, managing sensory needs, and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts.
Another way of thinking about this is imaging our own body as an engine. When we are running “just right” we are at our optimum, able to problem solve, concentrate, and learn. When our engine is in a lower gear, we may feel tired and unengaged. When we are in high gear, we may feel hyper, energetic, or stressed. Being able to self-regulate is the ability to identify what gear you are in, and change gears to meet the demand of the situation.
Throughout this section, we discuss the Zones of Regulation and strategies your child can use to “get into the Green Zone.” Some of these strategies such as yoga, relaxation, or mindfulness, are skills that need to be learnt and practiced! The following are resources recommended for practicing strategies that will help your child self-regulate.
