The Kindergarten class can be a busy place and being familiar with personal belongings is helpful. Although new clothes or backpacks may be exciting for the first day of Kindergarten, ensure your child is familiar with their items so they can identify them in a new setting. For example, you can use your child’s lunch kit when you go for a picnic, or their backpack when you go for walks over the summer.
Even in the house, encourage your child to self-retrieve items before you go out.
For some fun practice, organize a scavenger hunt that includes multiple personal belongings within your home (e.g. toothbrush, favourite toy, lunch box, water bottle)!
You can also use labels inside your child’s belongings and have them practice looking for their name.
