An exciting part of the Kindergarten day is class story time. Practicing sitting and listening to a story without interrupting will be good practice to prepare your child for this part of their daily routine. It is okay if your child stops you to ask questions or comment on the story itself, the goal is to maintain focus on the story rather than becoming distracted by external factors.
Explicit practice of sitting down to read a story together will help your child get used to this routine
Talk about the Zones of Regulation with your child before sitting down for a quiet activity. Using the Zones Visual, ask your child “how are you feeling? What zone are you in?”
If your child has the wiggles, try some “calm down ideas” before you sit down for a quiet activity, such as:
Taking slow, deep breaths
Using fidget toys, squeezing something squishy or cuddling something soft
Taking a short walk
Counting to 10
Getting a drink of water
