Unlike gross motor skills which involve the large muscles of the body, fine motor skills involve the use of the small muscles that control the hands, fingers and thumb. Fine motor skills are the skills children use everyday in all sorts of activities such as trying to zip up their clothes and fasten buttons, grab toys, write, colour, snip, and even eat! These ‘simpler’ fine motor abilities that children begin to gain practice in during their younger years will help to set the stage and act as building blocks for their success in more complex tasks as they get older.
Like with self-help, self-regulation and gross motor skills, a child’s confidence in their fine motor abilities is a crucial element that boosts their independence, self-esteem and overall success! Fine motor skills and abilities become increasingly important as children age and progress through school and community life. Over the course of the summer as you prepare your child for Kindergarten, we encourage you to give some of the activities in this section a try!
