During lunch and recess, your child will have the opportunity to play on the playground under supervision. They may see other children climbing and jumping, and therefore we encourage you to facilitate this same type of play over the summer before Kindergarten. Playing on playgrounds also helps to build a child’s strength, balance, coordination, confidence, and is great exercise! Playground play is good not just for developing skills for sports and fitness; benefits such as strength, balance, coordination are all necessary for the smaller tasks in life too, such as getting on and off the toilet or sitting at the classroom desk learning to write.
When your child is walking down the stairs at home, encourage them to safely jump off the last step with two feet! This mimics the action of jumping off playground equipment and will help to build that strength and confidence.
Create obstacle courses in the yard or at home to encourage your child to climb, run, and jump as much as possible! These courses can be made with everyday items, or the sidewalk chalk that was included in your Welcome to Kindergarten bag. There are some videos below to give you some ideas!
When it is safe to do so, take your child to the playground--especially their future school playground. While you are there, try not to help them jump off the bottom step or climb up the ladders. Allow your child to safely explore and try new challenges!
