Twisting lids, door handles and doorknobs is a valuable skill for any Kindergartener to have. These skills help children open doors on their own, complete the tasks of toileting on their own, and open up their lunch containers with ease. Some knobs might be harder to turn, and some containers might be more difficult to open, so do not be discouraged if your child still requires some help in this area! Simply try to encourage your child to try these skills on their own and reinforce their efforts along the way.
Involve your little one in the kitchen! Practice stirring, pouring and turning to strengthen their hand muscles and fine motor control as you cook up something fun together.
Be mindful of incorporating some "task specific" practice into your routine; encourage your child to turn the taps on and off by themselves, open their own lunch containers, and twist the knobs to open a door. The more explicit practice, the better!
Try playing fun games like nuts & bolts. Encourage your child to twist all the nuts & bolts together as a way to work on their fine motor control.
