As adults, adjusting our tone of voice for indoor and outdoor settings comes quite easily. However, for children just entering Kindergarten this skill comes with practice! Below are some suggestions on how you might encourage your child to begin to recognize the difference on how/when to use their indoor/outdoor voices in the appropriate settings.
Children often learn a lot through observation! Model these behaviours to your child and let them know when, or why, you might adjust your tone of voice in various settings.
Oftentimes, our tone of voice is impacted by our emotions - when we are angry, we might speak louder and when we are sad, we might speak more quietly. Introduce your child to the idea of taking an emotional check-in using a “Feelings Check-in Chart” to help manage their tone!
