I started playing badminton in high school for some reason, and spent the next four years of college practicing with the badminton club. There are too many things I learned there to write here, but I will just mention two good things.
One was that as an alumnus, I was able to go coaching high school boys and girls as an undergraduate and graduate student and learned the joy of coaching youngsters. In fact, I was a quiet and timid kid from a very young age who was not good at socializing, much less public speaking, and I never thought I would become a teacher (as I am now), but I think I was able to break out of that shell through badminton.
Another good thing about playing badminton was that it gave me what is called "guts”. The word "guts" may give a negative impression these days, but I think “guts” here means to work hard no matter what, and even when you think you have reached your limit, you have to keep going and keep pushing yourself over the limit. It is similar to perseverance, but not the only thing. Even when you are exhausted, you have to keep your concentration and use your calm judgment to get through your opponents. I never thought that the day would come when I would be able to use this kind of “guts” in my work, but in the past few years, I realized how much I appreciate this kind of “guts”.
Now, these things also apply to mathematics. Math is fun to do and to teach. On the other hand, “guts” are sometimes important to survive in the professional world of mathematics. Well, I hope you can read this as the ramblings of an old man who reached the age of 60 last year ... .

Viewing manifolds through singularities
Viewing manifolds through singularities
Abstract (first part):
In ancient times, it seems that people imagined that the world was like a flat surface that went on endlessly, or that there was an end somewhere where the world ended. In reality, however, the surface of the earth is like a 2-dimensional sphere. A “manifold” is a mathematical object that is like a plane around each point, a so-called Euclidean space, but it is not clear what it is as a whole. The universe in which we live may be considered as such. I am studying such manifolds by using singularities of functions and maps defined on them. For example, in the mid-20th century, Milnor won the Fields Prize for his discovery of the so-called exotic 7-sphere, which is topologically the same as the standard 7-sphere (continuously deformable) but not smoothly the same as the standard one. However, it is not well known that he used a function on it to show that it is topologically the same as the standard 7-sphere. His result shows that the function alone cannot identify the smooth structure in general. I was able to show about 30 years ago that if we consider maps into high dimensional Euclidean spaces, then we can also identify smooth structures. Since then, I have continued to investigate the relationship between the structures of manifolds and the singularities of maps on them. In this lecture, I would like to talk about such "global singularity theory of differentiable maps" so that people in other fields can understand how interesting it is (though I am not sure if I manage to do that). I would also like to talk about interdisciplinary collaboration, in which such research can somehow be applied to large-scale data visualization, as much as time permits.

Abstract (second part):
Although it might be embarrassing, I would like to share some of my experiences that may give you some hints as I look back on my own mathematical life and reflect on my thoughts. I would like to talk about a teacher I met at elementary school, the boringness of entrance exam mathematics, my encounter with the joy of teaching, the energetic Latin Americans I met while studying in Switzerland, the passionate mathematicians I met in Brazil, becoming the director of IMI at Kyushu University, collaboration with researchers in different fields, and diversity.

Feedback from participants:
The talk was very inspiring. I was delighted to witness a senior Japanese mathematician openly sharing their visionary perspective on significant topics, particularly regarding the challenges that lie before us.
