The imperfect verb form is the most regular in French
and it shows the ongoing past: or description in the past I verbed, I was verbing or I used to verb.
To form, take the "nous" form in the present tense, take off the "-ons" and add the endings :
ais
ais
ait
ions
iez
aient
This works for all verbs.
Je parlais......................nous parlions
tu parlais......................vous parliez
il parlait......................ils parlaient
I spoke, I was speaking, I used to speak
The only truly irregular verb in the imparfait is être :
j'étais
tu étais
il était
nous étions
vous étiez
ils étaient
If a verb has a spelling change in the nous form of the present tense, such as -ger verbs (manger, nager, voyager) or -cer verbs (commencer) the spell change exists in the imparfait for all forms that have the "a" as the first letter of the ending.
Example : je mangeais ....but......nous mangions
................tu commençais...but...vous commenciez
These verbs have slight spelling changes because of their nous form in the present tense:
changer - nous changeons...........je changeais
voyager - nous voyageons......... je voyageais
manger - nous mangeons........... je mangeais
commencer - nous commençons........... je commençais
Of course...you need to kow the NOUS FORM of verbs in the present tense:
