Project for World Culture
Goals:
You are able to compare and contrast your Burlington or Vermont Culture with another culture.
You are able to demonstrate several different aspects of culture that impact how a society functions.
Project:
Please choose a country or a region which you may analyze for the following cultural impacts
1. Where is your country or region located and what is its size. When giving size, please DO NOT give square miles, but rather compare it to the size of Vermont or the US….the comparison does not need to be exact!
2. What are natural or economic resources that contribute to your country’s culture? For example are they an oil rich nation, a cattle nation, or a nation with few economic resources? How does that impact their culture? How is that different or the same in the United States/Vermont?
3. What are cultural values of your country/region? This is where you will look at religion, (Is there a primary religion and if so what are some aspects of that religion?) and political beliefs (how is there government formed?...is it democratic? Is it based in socialism, capitalism, totalitarianism, communism etc.) Is religion and government connected or separate? Are there other values that impact their culture specifically? How is that the same or different than what you experience in Vermont?
4. What are some cultural events or holidays that are important for your country? This could include sports, religious holidays, national holidays and other important events. For example, the superbowl is not a national holiday in the US, but it is clearly an important event and says much about our culture.
5. What are other important cultural aspects of you country? For instance language, music, dress, food, housing etc.
Your presentation may be a powerpoint or a “report” with visuals. You do not need to memorize the report, but you should be highly familiar with the material having practiced presenting it several times. We will only have 4 days in the computer lab to complete this project. You may use the internet, but it is my suggestion to use the culture grams and the MANY books on religion and culture that are found in the library. Sometimes the internet either has too much info or even wrong info. We will lan to practice presentation on Tuesday March 13, and present on Friday January 22.
