cybersafety and security

Artifact: CyberSafety & Security (Two-part Webinar Series)

Overview:

This artifact is a three hour webinar I conduct for participants going through our IT/Tech Director Certification program. The resources located on the website provide resources to educators to help them protect student data and educate students about managing their digital identity.

Reflection:

Part of living in the digital era is understanding that our private information is more vulnerable than ever before. That is why this artifact is so important. We hear new stories about ID theft and data breaches all the time that affect millions of people. When it comes to student data, it is important that schools invest in cybersecurity and online safety education. Education is key to drastically reducing the risk of data being stolen, and it involves the entire school community. Other items highlighted in this webinar series are the importance of having strong passwords and keeping students safe from online predators.

tips for securing your daTA

Artifact: Four Tips for Keeping Your Data Secure in the Cloud (Blog Post)

Overview:

This artifact is a blog post I wrote that shares tips that educators can put into practice to help secure their data in the cloud. Some of the tips include: 1) Use strong passwords; 2) Encrypt your data; 3) Read terms and conditions; and 4) Think before you click.

Reflection:

I wrote this blog post as a result of a conversation I had with a former colleague at the TCEA Convention. I was presenting on social media use in the classroom and she mentioned a fantastic presentation she attended at the convention on cybersecurity. Our conversation soon drifted to a discussion about passwords and how secure our passwords really are, especially with the amount of data we are storing in the cloud. The conversation had such an impact on me that I decided I needed to share what we discussed with other educators through this blog post.

Social Media: Legal Pitfalls and Best Practices

Artifact: Social Media: Legal Pitfalls and Best Practices (SxSWedu Presentation)

Overview:

This artifact is a resource website for a presentation I did at SXSWedu. The presentation involved having candid conversation surrounding the top legal pitfalls of social media for school districts as well as best practices for implementing social media in your school district.

Reflection:

I had the opportunity to present this session with my friend Lena Engel, who is a school attorney. She was able to speak first hand about legal implications that school districts face as well as discuss the evolution of legal decisions impacting first amendment application in schools. I spoke about best practices and I gave recommendation for building a social media policy. The presentation was very well received and was an eye opener for many in attendance. Great conversations were had.

digital footprint

Artifact: Positive Digital Footprint Activity (Get your own copy of the Positive Digital Footprint Activity here.)

Overview:

This artifact is a Positive Digital Footprint activity I created. The purpose of this artifact is to give educators an example and a template they can use in their classroom that has students think about what their digital footprint will look like 10 to 15 years from now. Students were to illustrate their footprint with words, images, or videos on the Google Slide activity.

Reflection:

I created this artifact because it is important that we educate students from an early age on how to create and maintain a positive digital footprint. Many students today don't realize that the websites they visit, emails they send, and information they post on social media are permanent and could affect their future. Education about this is key!

This artifact is part of the blog post I wrote on ways to Celebrate Digital Citizenship Week.
