Nova Beja (1973-2309)
Introduction
As a former Portuguese colony and being positioned far on the outskirts of the moon, this nation is often hidden in the background of most selenopolitical issues. But that doesn't mean Nova Beja is a boring state. Nova Beja is a perfect example of a minor nation doing their best to overcome difficulties in order to compete with Great Powers.
Success Through Ingenuity
Portugal had quite some issues like lack of manpower, comparative lack of highly skilled scientists, lack of large-scale cooperation, and lack of funding. The lack of manpower was mostly solved in 1940 by resettling Spanish refugees, fleeing the civil war, on the moon. This helped for a while but also made visible numerous other bottlenecks like the lack of available rockets. Portugal at first got many of its rockets through Great Britain, but after talks about the control of Greater Victoria heated up, Britain severely reduced allowed rocket and rocket part exports to Portugal. To further try and solve the lack of rockets, in 1989 Portugal alongside Italy, Catalonia, Greece, the Spanish Republic, and Cyprus established the Latin Rocketry Association. This association pooled together the member states' rockets and launch sites for continuous efficient cooperation. Through this all, many cracks showed themselves in the Portuguese strategy and position in Lunar Colonisation. Yet despite it all, Portugal still managed to hold onto massive swathes of land.
Lunária (1981-2080)
Introduction
Lunária was a small Portuguese city that made up an important link in Portugal's Lunar Colonisation process. Because of this, it was an important local rocketry inflow throughout much of the 20th century. Sadly for it, due to sparse lands suitable for farming surrounding the Settlement itself, it never fully grew into an autonomous state and being deeply connected with Nova Beja, the populace was given a vote and decided to join Nova Beja in 2081.
Nova Coimbra (1962-2309)
Introduction
A simple and standard state, this relatively peaceful nation is known for its fast beautiful hills and wide mountains. This former English and primarily Portuguese colony has persisted well on its multilingual populace, allowing for ease of trade with a large part of the moon.
Though peaceful in the modern era, its establishment was all but peaceful and nearly triggered a colonial war between Victoria and Nova Coimbra. The UK, following the Partition of Ten Thousand Souls, claimed full ownership over the Greater Victorian Island, despite claims on the island continuing to be disputed. Following this claim, the UK had a brief period of war, ending in the genocide of a Chinese colony; and it effectively wiped out a Dutch colony near what is now Wyke. Following this, the only competitor on the island for the UK was Nova Coimbra. While it did send three armies, the long distance between Nova Coimbra and Victoria; and constant pestering of Victorian troops by wildstates and raiding parties, led to a reluctant peace agreement.
