Like in our timeline, Britain was an important player in colonisation of differing territories. In ADTF, it was never slowed down by the war with Nazi Germany and, while it eventually lost most of its Terran holdings, it gained in land on the moon and later Mars.
It was the first on the moon in 1919, and thus stands as the first to have colonised it. The colony of Victoria, at the time Hubertsland, has been the longest continuous nation on the moon. This, however, also means it has had more time to lose its grip. The first period of shame came from Britains inability to hold their borderlands. Spread too thin, they relented and were one of the first major nations to recognise wildstates. The second period of shame was during elections scandals on earth. Many of those on the moon believed Britain to not care about them, despite the meager representation they did receive. A referendum occurred throughout Victoria, while simultaneously the Ramsey Farhold fell apart.
Allings (2067-2309)
Introduction
An extremely vast colony on the fringes of the Great Farside Desert. It is a destitute nation, poor and fractured into numerous small hotspots of activity, its geography is said to be "cursed" as most of its highly populated areas directly border hostile states making national security difficult.
Allings during the Great Lunar War
On January 2nd, 2296 Allings was invaded by Roosevelt beginning the Great Lunar War, soon after Rochland invaded on February 25th. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, Allings was fighting a two-front war with a lack of buffer territories. Allings High Command under General Mathison Gandyn devised a plan based around protecting the central coastline. This plan would sacrifice the majority of its populace in the hopes of over-extending the reach of its enemies.
April 2nd, Medden fell to Roosevelt forces, while three days later Norrenfield fell, both of these cities had vast industrial zones. May 14th, more devastating news reached Allings HC, Grannos had joined the war on the side of Rochland. By June 6th, Grannos' forces had taken the Oasis town of Prigiri. Colonel Lee M. Birlain suspected the chaotic enemy forces to have improperly manned their flanks and ordered a pensive manoeuvre around the town. It resulted in a massive success, capturing 6,304 soldiers as POWs. Yet, the outwards position could not be held and a general retreat was ordered.
While the losses were devastating, High Command's gamble was successful as greater material was able to be shipped to the central coastline than expected from the Western front. For the remainder of the war, Allings continued a strategy based on guerilla warfare and attrition.
Arfour (2037-2301)
Introduction
Located in the Lunar Antarctic, Arfour is a city-state formed by the British to contest German Supremacy in the region, it is a small but active community with a sizeable mining industry. A successor state to Old Arfour, once a state situated far northward, its British inhabitants were forced southwards by German Wildstates. It is suspected that the wild states were paid by the German Moon Society (GMS) to raid, attack, and destroy British settlements in the area, as their behaviour was extremely aggressive.
During the Great Lunar War, Arfour was conquered by the GMS, which feared it could be a place where the Silverhill Republic could mount an offensive against them. Post-war a puppet regime was put in place, and the local economy restructured around the protection of the coast and the Antarctic passage.
Avalon/Abalon (2135-2309)
Introduction
Avalon, or recently popularised Abalon, is a primarily Scottish-Nigerian nation that gained independence following a referendum held in Victoria. Briefly a democracy, a populist was quickly elected and broke down the remaining democratic systems present within Avalon.
As of the present, Abalon is controlled by an unstable dictatorship, a shell of its former self. During the Great Lunar War, its oil and rubber production made it vital to the Victorian war effort resulting in an easing of relations between the two states. Within a few years, Victoria had removed sanctions, altered official statements, and worked towards improving relations with the small nation-state. Abalon seeing the benefits of a new buyer reopened democratic processes and resumed the practice of political accountability.
Astro-Scotia (2151-2309)
Introduction
Astro-Scotia also called New Scotland was created to be a sub-colony of the Goldenhill Colony (or Goldenhill). When Goldenhill was absorbed into the much larger Silverhill Republic, Astro-Scotia began to rebel and several uprisings occurred. Their people were tired of being controlled and occupied by those with no interests or relationships with their nation.
While a detachment of Silverhill peacekeepers was sent to control the situation, they were quickly overwhelmed and wiped out when their Headquarters was stormed and looted by an angry mob of Astro-Scotians. Their ships stolen and their position surrounded the peacekeepers were forced to surrender.
Aurelia (1992-2309)
Introduction
Originally another English colony, after three centuries of colonisation and migration by Japanese immigrants it had become a Japanese state in all but name and equity. Recently, Aurelia has been in turmoil as the Japanese majority have begun to protest for a better, more equal country. The English in Aurelia were sent by the RBSA and gained high amounts of aid and assistance from their homeland while the Japanese immigrants often were poorer migrants who lacked that support and aid resulting in a vast difference in socioeconomic statuses between these two groups. It didn't help that institutionalised discrimination and segregation were created to ensure there was no way for the Japanese to gain a greater socioeconomic status than their English counterparts.
Charlesland (2151-2309)
Introduction
Like Abalon, Charlesland was once a part of Victoria, gaining independence after a referendum though unlike Abalon it managed to remain a democratic state.
While Charlesland showed its ability to remain a stable and secure state for a prolonged time after independence, Abalon could not, resulting in investors willing to do business with Charlesland while abstaining from doing so with Abalon, thus allowing the former to continue growing its economy and capabilities.
Charlesland During the Great Lunar War
During the Great Lunar War, Charlesland was one of the smaller Silver Faction members, meaning its resources and ability to wage war were limited. Yet while it was unable to directly contribute soldiers and regiments, its contributions were through the country's high tech industry. Prior to the war, Charlesland's economy was centred around the production and distribution of high-tech products. Much of its expertise and consumer industry switched to defence of its home continent following the onset of the war.
Darwin (2231-2309)
Introduction
Originally a part of Victoria, its independence was gained through a vote as well. Either the people of Darwin could remain as a British colony, or leave and gain autonomy as a separate territory from Victoria. Darwin and its associated territories voted to leave, forming the Republic of Darwin. The nation derives its name and flag from the honourable Charles Darwin, its government has sought to document native life on a massive and standardised scale, something that had never been done prior.
Darwin During the Great Lunar War
Originally joining the war on the side of the Silverhill Republic; at the time Shin Nihon and the German Moon Society weren't allies, the war being limited to the Polish Belt and the Honey Jungle. When Shin Nihon finally entered the war, most had predicted the action, and the Darwinian army focused on slowing the advance of Shin Nihon forces for as long as possible. While they had managed to hold the New Japanese advance for some time, it would not last.
Following a New Japanese offensive on the coast, the Darwinian army was split in two, this was the first major blow in a series of defeats and setbacks that would lead to the Silver Faction being forced off the island, it would take years before the Darwinian troops would see their homeland again.
Frederiksland (1979-2309)
Introduction
Frederiksland was named after one of the brothers Leer, a well known adventurous set of twins. The twins went on their fourth expedition in these lands and on their way discovered the white sea. What they originally thought was but a mere lake, ended up being a vast sea. Sadly for Frederik, he would never get to see this beautiful sea. Only 2 months prior, he had died near what's now Linte due to oxalic acid poisoning.
Because of their historical connection, Frederiksland and Edmunting have long had many political, economic, cultural and military pacts. The two unstoppable twins left behind two inseparable states.
Frehnim (2057-2309)
Introduction
Frehnim is a large far side lunar nation. It's quite poor but not particularly so for the region.
The nation is split up into smaller 17 autonomous republics and, despite its overall status as a capitalist nation, 4 communes. This comes from its history as a conglomerate of integrated rogue states (see dictionary entry for Wild State).
The nation is decided into four areas. The first is a medium-sized populous area in the west. The second area is the vast sparsely populated central plans. The third is the populous northern coast on the white sea. The fourth and last region is the large sparsely populated lake lands in the east.
These have their own economic focuses. The northern coast focuses on mining, services, and the study of native life forms. Similarly, the western plains have a large focus on services and education. The large central plains on the other hand get 90% of their income through agriculture making it a backwater of the nation. Much like the lake lands, which get 70% of their economy through fishing and the catching of lunar life.
Golden Republic (1995-2150)
Introduction
Goldenhill was a small state surrounding current-day New Wustrow (A city in the north of the Silverhill Republic). It gained statehood at the same time as the Silverhill Republic and joined it in a political union quite quickly after. Though the process was quite complex, after years of working together and added bureaucracy, the people finally were allowed to vote to join the Silverhill Republic.
Indigo (2045-2309)
Introduction
Indigo is a small extremely rich city-state on the moon. While it used to have a tenuous relationship with its much larger neighbour, Zema, in recent years they've grown to be allies.
Technology sharing, trade, and even military cooperation all came about due to Indigo's participation in the New Miedzymorze. The New Miedzymorze is a military alliance that seeks to halt Nowa Polska's conquest of the so-called Polish Belt.
This military alliance, while successful at first, only delayed the inevitable. On the eve of May 6th 2297, Nowa Polska declared war on the smaller Nowy Republika Polska, a member of the alliance. Elite Indigo tank groups had the mission of counter-attacking prevailing salients, thus preventing Nowa Republika Polska's troops from being overrun. It is estimated that, without Indigo's armed forces, the New Miedzymorze alliance's defensive lines would have completely collapsed by late 2298.
Maya State (2122-2309)
Introduction
Maya (or Mhaya), Was a part of the former grander Ramsey Colony/Farhold. The people here saw no difference between the British Elites on earth, stopping them from living their lives, and the Ramsian elites in Trimouth. This fear of subjugation led to three years of rebellion and ended with the independence of Maya from the Ramsey Farhold. This was a heavy blow to the Ramsey Farhold, as the Maya State took many rich lands away from it.
The Maya State while being less populous than the Singer State and the Ramsey State (succeszor to the Ramsey Farhold), had much of the nations mining resources and industrial capabilities. The most pressing of these was a collection of the largest known lithium deposits on the moon. Lithium deposits that in years prior, brought unimaginable wealth to Ramsian elites.
In its early existence, the Maya State had quite a bit of trouble. Its relations with its neighbours were sour, while local communes were popping up left and right. Especially large ones came about in the southeastern plains. The vastness of the plains made it a difficult region to control, and after a local commune was conquered by New Polish troops, the Maya State had to hand over the area to it.
The Maya State has large plans for the development of the Lithium rich territories. These plans are intended to breathe new life into the nation, however, an ongoing border dispute with The Ramsey State and a large commune that's on the rise within the nation are pushing investors away.
New Britain (2056-2309)
Introduction
The colonial government of New Britain was established in 2056. Though amidst the vast red plains it lacked much in the way of controlling its populace. While it practically had no control over the countryside, it also lacked control over practically all cities outside of its direct neighbours.
Around 2116, the central government made several attempts at increasing its reach, though by this time the nation functioned more like a patchwork of oligarchical dictatorships masquerading as a centralised democracy. The workers in the red fields, tired of corrupt policemen only serving the interest of rich capital oligarchs, revolted. To those who lost their hands from dangerous factories, and those forced to work in the mines or starve had everything to gain, and nothing to lose but their chains. Thousands of starved workers laid down their tools and raised the fist of revolution. Though the revolution was long and bloody, following the Massacre of the Pannin family, a socialist republic was declared.
New Britain During the Great Lunar War
New Britain played an important role in halting Rochland and Grannos' advancement. New Britain, from the start, positioned its troops aggressively, diverting men and arms from the Rochlans-Allings front. But Rochland hadn't prepared properly for New Britain's full entry into the war on April 2nd 2298. The unprepared lines of Rochland were quickly beaten back by New Britain and forced Rochland to divert troops to this front. What followed was a practical stalemate on the Roosevelt-Allings border, a full-scale counter-offensive by Allings against Rochland, and a desperate defence of Rochland in its heartland.
North Victoria (2135-2309)
Introduction
North Victoria is a small nation consisting of an island and a chunk of Victoria Island. It became independent after all states within the colony of Victoria were given the choice of independence from Britain, they were the only ones to vote to leave.
North Victoria During the Great Lunar War
During the war, North Victoria played a prominent role in the production of food. It was the breadbasket for major players like Victoria, Esterre, and Ancrages. Outside of keeping quality of life high, North Victoria also played a role in ground defence. In February 2301, New Japan landed troops on the island of Cairning.
The Defence of Cairning
Cairning is a large island that makes up 50% of North Victoria. It not being connected to the mainland or Victoria puts it in a weaker position. New Japan attempted to abuse this weakened position by quickly overwhelming it with forces.
New Japanese forces landed in three different waves, the first landed, in the morning, near Otton and Ravham in the south, the second wave landed at noon on the flanks of Whithorn, lastly the third landed west of Cairning City at 3 pm. This multi-pronged attack was executed to sow chaos amongst the forces of North Victory.
Simultaneously, New Japanese troops landed near Seelen (Victoria), and north of Beçon (Astrives), bogging allied troops down.
New Japanese troops quickly descended down upon nearby urban areas. While the southern and Eastern landings were quite successful, North Victorian troops managed to form a stable fronting on the western edges of Cairning City. Troops retreating from the south, under the command of brigadier general Adam Arleys, formed a line near Glassfield, where they managed to halt the Japanese offensive.
At the end of the week, North Victoria only held onto 15% of the island, mostly consolidated around the urban edges of the Cairning City metropolitan area. The Japanese field Marshall, Sakai Tadaaki, believed the position of the North Victoria's to be weak. Using their own field artillery, and confiscated weaponry, the New Japanese began shelling the positions, near Glassfield.
On the fourth day of the shelling, Brigadier General Adam Arleys got word, he was now the highest-ranking officer the troops could contact. Unbeknown to him, lieutenant general kenningson died due to grenade shrapnel 3 days prior. Hearing of this he immediately ordered a small group of men to move through enemy lines in the dead of night through the northern swamplands. When behind enemy lines, these men had the mission to disrupt communication lines, and destroy infrastructure. The next day, general Arleys ordered another mission where 100 men used the sewer system to get past enemy lines where they were to get food, ammunition, and medical products. They were also ordered to destroy the tunnel system if found out. Most of these connections were figured out and destroyed within the first 3 days, but other connections lasted until the very end of the siege.
By the end of the first week of shelling, the North Victorian position was battered but more organised than before. And by the 8th day of shelling, the New Japanese army attacked from the east and south. While Sakai Tadaaki expected moderate gains, he was met with nearly immobile positions.
Brigadier General Arleys continued to hold his positions for 2 weeks, when he was forced to relent some of his more outward positions. After another 4 weeks, the men in the Cairning pocket ran out of medical supplies. Finally, on the eve of May 4th, the last positions of the Cairning pockets surrendered, having run out of bullets. The next day, Brigadier General Adam Arleys was unceremoniously executed, together with his high command team.
It'd take another 3 years for the island to be liberated. It was west of Whithorn when a ragtag group of North Victorian troops were found, destroying infrastructure, and communication lines. Adam Arleys troops stayed loyal to his command even years after his death.
New North Wales (2094-2309)
Introduction
New North Wales was, for a short time, a colonial governorship under the far British Allings Territories. When the first few outposts were set up, James Allings gave governorship of the coastal cities to Arwen Baughn. Under his rule, the town of New Rhyl grew to 35 thousands inhabitants.
While on the surface this made the area more prosperous and allowed for greater economic expansion, the increase in people in the surrounding plains made wildstate raids more and more common.
This problem was only compounded by the fact that Governor Allings, fearful of his successes being overlooked in the light of Baughn's, refused to send extra arms to the area.
Around 2089, attacks on frontier settlements increased. This led Governor Baughn to request the arming of a local militia to protect the town. On January 8th 2089, Derwen outpost was attacked resulting in the death of 272 people. It was only the week after this attack that Governor Allings allowed the Settlement of Derwen to fortify and defend themselves.
Following this attack, relations between Allings and New North Wales forces soured, while there was no real fighting between them, the respective forces often refused to work together. On multiple occasions, Allings and New North Wales did not notify the other of incoming bandits, resulting in many casualties.
This political squabbling came to a halt on may 15th. Commander of the British Empire John Turgard was near the frontier settlement of Callys doing research on the local ecosystems, when his company got ambushed by 2 wolfpacks. When word got out that Allings forces had been trailing the bandit group for a few days near the autonomous province of New North Wales' borders and never notified NNW forces, there was outrage in the British parliament at home.
Allings command over his troops was severely limited, and the province of New North Wales became a completely separate colony from Allings. Amidst the scandals, Governor Arwen Baughn was forced to step down when a report came to light indicating he allowed a raid which killed 43 people to occur.
Passhill (2135-2309)
Introduction
Passhill is a small democratic nation with an extremely high population density. It too used to be a Victorian Territory, however, it never was a province on its own. During the independence referendum, Passhill citizens overwhelmingly voted for independence. A whopping 98,2% of votes were cast in favour of independence. After the referendum, the island was incorporated into North Victoria. This was a controversial decision, and after 9 years of political games, riots, and protests, Passhill itself was given the choice of independence. It’d take another 4 years after the vote for North Victoria to relinquish control over Passhill. At this point, however, much of the international businesses on the island had moved out, leaving it a husk of its former self.
The nation was in terrible condition and populist leaders were breaking down its democratic system. In the next 50 years (2164-2217), Passhill would endure 27 successful coups.
Life in Passhill started to improve, however, when some businesses gambled on establishing themselves in Passhill, which functioned as a nearby tax-haven to rich states like Victoria, Charlesland, Darwin and North Victoria.
Slowly, bit by bit, the wounds of the nation began to heal. Its pseudo-democratic system switched to a hybrid regime, and eventually, in 2248, Passhill regained its democracy in full. While wealth inequality continued to be dramatic, from 2275 onwards, the people of Passhill, were able to compare their lives with that of Avalon and Nova Coimbra.
Passhill and the Great Lunar War
The Great Lunar War had a negative effect on Passhill, as tourism ground to a halt. The island realised it would be no match for the New Japanese army. With its minuscule size, and mainland dependent cities Passhill found itself in hot waters.
To protect itself, the government important coastal guns and build coastal forts all over the islands. The belief was that Passhill was guaranteed to fall if the New Japanese managed to land troops on the island. It was just a matter of life and death to stop this from occurring. Alongside the coastal forts, quick response train guns and motorised units were on alert at all times to drive any beachhead into the ocean.
Ramsey State (2018*-2127-2309)
The Farhold War (2018-2127)
The Ramsey Farhold was the poorest of the former British colonies, and, while not being poor in it of itself, it did stand out as a failure amongst its British peers. Large parts of this unfortunate situation could, however, be attributed to its northerly neighbour Shin Nippon aggressive behaviour having multiple border conflicts over what's now the Sargent State.
Its geography also impeded the nation. It was nearly split in two by Nova Beja and Nowa Polska, while states like Lunar Kalmar, took valuable plainlands away from its area of influence.
The collapse (2105-2129)
The people in the Ramsey Farhold, were sick of Britain’s shit. To them, it was a faraway power, with nothing to do with the people of the Farhold. While protests against British rule were already common, they became more frequent after the arrest of a prominent independence leader.
From 2117 to 2122 terrorist attacks on prominent governmental buildings increased drastically. Alongside this rebelling forces mobilised all over what are now the Maya and Sargent States. This led to the break up of the nation in 2122 into three somewhat equal-sized regions, one of which would continue to be ruled by Britain. The territory that would continue to be under British rule kept the Ramsey Farhold name.
The situation in the Ramsey Farhold was still tenuous. Attempts were made at further representation for and integration of the Ramsey Farhold into the British empire. While some changes, like the Home of Our People Act which set up more self-rule for the Ramsey State, alleviated some negative opinions of the British Empire, these changes were too little too late.
On the tenth of October 2129, the Ramsey Farhold officially ceased existing and was succeeded by the independent Ramsey State.
The Sargent State (2124-2309)
The Sargent State much like the Maya State is a successor to the Ramsey Farhold. The Sargent State is the most successful of the 3 brother nations. During the collapse era of the Ramsey Farhold, it saw surprisingly few riots. The populace here was complacent with the status quo. Trading with New Japan, and the less volatile regions of Nova Beja saw the populace's quality of life increase drastically. When the Maya State gained independence, the Sargent State continued to remain part of the Ramsey Farhold for a few years. The reason for its eventual independence was an influx of immigrants, local violence, and not having any land connections to Ramsey proper. After its independence from Ramsey, the Sargent State's economy continued to grow, as a local parliament removed sanctions on Nova Beja, New Japan, and The Maya State.
Silverhill Republic (1995-2309)
Introduction
The Silverhill Republic is the most successful former British colony. This state in particular is known for its extremely high levels of democracy and its well-educated populace. While it never joined in on the Second American Civil War or other lunar conflicts, it always played a central role in these conflicts as an arbiter of peace, by sending doctors overseas and by allowing refugees to come and settle.
Silverhill in the Great Lunar War
Silverhill was a massive player in the Great Lunar War. So much so that the alliance it was part of was named for it, the Silver Faction.
It joined the war in 2298, after the sinking of one of its ships. But in truth, Silverhill was helping in the war effort long before this. Since the declaration of war of Nowa Polska on the New Miedzemorze in March of 2296, The Silverhill Republic had been lendleasing the alliance of smaller nations. In June of 2297, The Silverhill Republic send a large group of advisors and military officials to the area. These officials were there to train troops, and study new methods of war.
In July of 2298, a ship belonging to Silverhill’s “Peaceful Fleet” was sunk in the Strait of Erraid, by a German Moon Society Vessel. This, alongside an ongoing border scuffle, pushed the Silverhill Republic into the war directly.
From the German perspective, the Silverhill Fronting was unstable. Silverhill troops were spread thin across a long fronting through harsh terrain. The GMS' high command believed that, despite harsh terrain putting tanks out of the question, their numerical superiority would allow them to push forward even under contested air. For this reason, in August of 2298, A front wide offensive on Silverhill lines started.
Immediately, GMS troops broke through lines along the long straight bordered panhandle. This breakthrough had the goal of encircling men stationed South of Herzfort. The Silverhill troops were ordered to protect several defensive lines, and retreat to a defensive line further back, until they got to a designated river line. Silverhill high command wished to make their enemy move into unsupplied territories in the jungle. Alongside the jungle, The Red Marshes would be used as a way to bog GMS soldiers down in terrain where they’d face heavy attrition.
Not only did this function as a way to increase attrition on the enemy, the time garnered through this strategy, was put to use in the mobilisation of the army.
Victoria (1992-2309)
Introduction
Victoria is the last fully Terran linked democracy. Victoria votes on and is governed by the British parliament, however, recently more and more pushes towards autonomy have resulted in talks on the future of Victoria, only time will say in which direction this economically mighty territory will go.
Victoria During the Great War
Victoria had the largest navy of the Silver Faction and thus played a large role in the naval defence of the alliance. It entered the war on the same day Silverhill did. Though Victoria did warn its allies that its armed forces were not ready for large scale combat yet. Silverhill, Victoria, and Esterre came together to plan.
Silverhill's role was to let GMS troops strike too deep, where the enemy would suffer attrition. Esterre had set its focus on the production of equipment for the other's armies and navies. Victoria had to mobilise its lacking armed land forces, and in the meantime use its navy to intercept trade vessels of the enemy. The three powers believed that following this plan would allow the Silver Faction to, in time, strike back and win the war. This belief may have been too optimistic as on the third of May 2300, New Japan joined the war against the Silver Faction. While this did bring lunoir into the war on their side, the Silver Faction was not prepared to face their forces.
Victoria played an even larger role in the second plan. Victoria was to protect the Silver Faction from naval invasions. While it had some victories, like that of the battle over Estoti Island, Its first major, yet pyrrhic victory came at the battle of Île de Gloire. Here the Romance Fleet, led by the Victorian admiral Kenneth MacLeod, managed to sink three flagship carriers of the Third Japanese fleet. The Victorian sub-fleet would be stuck in port for the following one and a half years to be repaired. In this time smaller detachments would be used for convoy protection. The Fleet wouldn't play a major role again until the reconnection of Darwin.
