American Mandate of the Moon (1929-2170, 2170-2172)
Introduction
As the United States' claimed territories on the moon, the AMM played a large role in shaping the selenopolitical landscape. In its early days, it halted the Austrian and German expanse in the arctic, and the AMM is widely considered to have caused the downfall of the Altafwid Alsamawii.
It may come as a surprise that you won't find the AMM on any modern map. You see, despite its strength externally, it was weak and divided internally. With every wave of the business cycle, more and more people fell into one of a few political extremes. fell due to civil unrest. The first sign of the rotting structure caving in was a string of assassinations of local politicians from 2159-2170. The second sign came in the form of the navy mutiny of 2168, this mutiny saw an armed uprising of the navy take control of multiple ports for 7 months, before it was put down with promises of pensions and higher pay.
After this came the complete decline of the state. In 2170, more mutinying soldiers and workers strikes started fighting in the streets, the capitol was completely surrounded by far-right nationalists, and all over the country, local riots occurred. Though this was a scary period, it quieted down after the leader of the far-right group was captured and troops of the GMS arrived to help squash the communists.
The American Mandate of the Moon wouldn't be so lucky 2 years later. Political polarisation continued strikes and a perceived faked election resulted in the complete breakdown of the nation in 2172.
American State of Luna (2172-2309)
Introduction
The American State of Luna is infamous for its eugenics boards and dystopian governmental measures. Its extremist government gained power through a complex civil war and was brought to even more extremities due to the ongoing stalemate. The country itself is the second most populous American state on the moon despite being only the 5th largest of the American colonies.
Lunar American Civil War
The leaders of the American State of Luna were one of the larger right-wing opposition parties and even began the original uprising in 2170 which was quickly followed by a similar uprising of the communists. As the ASL was losing more and more ground while the communist bloc only gained more power, midway through the revolts, the ASL army agreed to help the government restore order.
This situation did not hold for long, as in 2172 the social democrats won the election. The nation quickly fell into disarray. Years of political polarisation, combined with the tensions caused by the first uprising broke the nation irreconcilably. And ASL forces were some of the first to pick up arms en masse to fight for their vision of an American Mandate of the Moon.
Though pushed out of the capital of Newark by the communists, ASL saw some great successes. Most famously was their rather rapid victory over the Kingdom of Luna, which fell after ASL forces took Lloyd city.
The Great Lunar War
The entry of ASL into the War over the Polish belt is one of three main events that elevated said war to the Great Lunar War. While technically still at war with the FSSL, no real fighting occurred across the wide border. This changed after the ASL declared war on the Silverhill Republic. The ASL knew they could not beat the FSSL at sea, so their immediate objective was to push across the northern plain and take major ports like Aminne, Fort James, and Bradfort. While it further suffered under manpower restraints, the ASL armed forces made up for this with a large modern rover force.
The ASL is a great ally for the German Moon Society as It now has a large part of the moon’s heavy industry while simultaneously producing 23% of total synthetic fuel production. Stronger than ever, it is looking to heat up tensions with all of its neighbours.
Aname Republic (1978-2009)
Introduction
Aname was an early failed attempt at colonising the far side of the moon in modern-day Lincoln near gulfield. The site was chosen for its central position and soil samples indicating high fertility across the river's flood zone. During the first mission to send people here, 3 of the 9 rockets malfunctioned in a rare and dramatic set of events. All on board perished, with only 4 of the leftover 6 rockets even ending up in the area. This was to accommodate for the loss of farming and buying equipment. Following the disaster that was the first flight, safety standards drastically increased, while old rockets were taken out of service in droves. This meant that the ready understaffed colony now lacked the supply imports it was supposed to get. The situation got so bad, that most people fled the colony. With the colony now being an economic black hole, the decision was made to abandon the project for the time being.
Annings (2170-2170, 2172-2172)
Introduction
Annings was a short-lived commune in the east of the American mandate of the moon. The area was distinct, not per se because of their left-wing ideology, but because of its cultural and linguistic oddities. The people here primarily speak an offshoot of Esperanto and have quite communal village lifestyles.
Annings' army, often called the greens, green shirts, or the Farmers’ Army, was surprisingly competent. Annings was thus able to hold vast swathes of land even outside of traditionally Annings territories without much turmoil. This resulted in the region not seeing too much conflict other than a few large offensives in the south.
In the end, Annings agreed to join the communists peacefully, fearing the rise and governance of the fascists more than losing some sovereignty to the communists.
Apollo (2041-2309)
Introduction
Apollo is a massive culturally American, linguistically Esperanto nation. Its capital is Nactario and presides in the centre of the nation. Apollo has, to its own dismay, been cut into small distantly positioned densely populated areas, which find themselves cut off from the rest of the nation, often by hundreds of miles of sand dunes and desert pavement. The outstretched state has seen rampant corruption due to the lacklustre capabilities of the central government.
Apollo, despite its less than stellar build-up, has not seen much international conflict. Those nations around it see the troubled regions of Apollo more as a threat to their internal stability rather than land to be desired. With its only relatively rich area bordering their main ally, Lincoln.
A large portion of Apollo's wealth is made abroad, where men from Apollo slave away in the factories of Kepler, or act as the pawns in the mercenary armies of Roosevelt. While this does flow some money back to Apollo itself, it's ultimately a curse. These highly skilled workers work directly in foreign factories, depleting Apollo's internal workforce and capabilities for industrial growth.
Carden (2003-2309)
Introduction
A small city-state that originally was a prominent wildstate. Originally founded by a couple of well-read farmers in a land far away from the overreaching hand of the central government, where crimes were rampant. These farmers came together and with the support of the local villages started the council of 12. This council allowed every working-age man and married woman to vote on their members and each member was allowed to stay on the council for 6 years, twice.
During the Lunar American Civil War, it played a minor role in medical aid for all parties involved. While it did gear up for a feared attack by the American State of Luna, it never ended up doing so when the eastern front stalled. It repeated this role in the Great Lunar War.
Falkings Republic (2172-2309)
Introduction
The Falkings Republic is the moon’s bastion of democracy. A so-called meritocracy where the rich rule throughout generations and the poor only get poorer. The nation has often been criticised as “A bastion of free speech where 99% is too poor to speak”. Like the ASL and FSSL, this nation came to be during the Lunar American Civil War.
The Lunar American Civil War
Unlike the FSSL and ASL, pro-Falkings forces didn’t arm themselves until the second outbreak of revolutions. Falkings was a prominent politician that wasn’t as radical as many other faction leaders. Initially, Falkings believed he and his supporters could save the country from imminent collapse, but the day after the great collapse (a day in which large parts of the country and armed forces mutinied) Falkings went his own way. Though Falkings went their own way, the relationship between the old government forces and pro-Falkings forces wasn't too bad. In many battles like the siege of Kennel, old government, and Falking forces would work together to breach enemy lines.
Falkings forces for some time were spread throughout the American Mandate of the Moon, however, day after day, more of their mainland forces were pushed back, resulting in the Star Harbour flight on July 6th 2172. Though their continental forces receded, their insular counterparts consolidated power of the western islands.
A Secure Position
During and after the Lunar American Civil War, Falkings went through multiple attempts to secure its position. This was initially done through 4 measures. The first was a grand naval assault on the Earhart Islands which held large port facilities that could supply a naval invasion into Falkings. While initially planned as a grand naval assault, these islands were handed over to the Falkings Republic by the old government for a temporary ceasefire. With this done, Falkings began to look northwards. To the north of this fledgling republic was Aurelia, a nation that had long fallen into autocracy. Democratic revolutionaries were supported through equipment, propaganda, and training from Falkings officers. While this occurred, a delegation team of the Falkings Republic was sent to Vallern, where they were to acquire a large arms manufacturing deal. Following this, Falkings looked southward in its most controversial policy, Majani Erasure. All Majani people were made out to be terrorists, and the Majani theocracy was occupied by Falkings forces. To this day (2309), The Falkings Republic is fighting Majani Revolutionaries on the island.
Federative Socialist States of Luna (2172-2309)
Introduction
The FSSL before the great lunar war is often called a state with nothing noteworthy in the. Its economy is below average and it has a Marxist-Leninist government. In the past, however, it was filled with propaganda inspiring tales, like the southern offensive, an extremely effective manoeuvre ending in the siege of the James Farhold. The FSSL’s later successes are considered the events that caused the stable armistice to take hold.
The Lunar American War
During the Great Lunar war, the communists were some of the first to rise up and were one of only two rebelling parties during the 2170 uprisings. They saw extensive successes, being able to push back against both fascist and old government forces. Their successes were so grand in fact that the leader of the fascist signed a deal to lay down arms against the old government and help fight off the communists.
In the following two years, the communists were demonised, both the nationalists and the social Democrats saw the looming threat of the large worker militias. Though they weren't completely effective, in the two years following the uprising anti-communist propaganda was met with a stark decline in union membership. This effect was especially prominent in the west. This was caused by the fact that the decline of unions wasn't universal across industries. The navy for instance saw a drastic increase in union membership, while rover factories declined starkly in their memberships.
After the elections of 2172, tensions rose, and when the rover in which a delegate from the communist and the social Democrats were driving to a conference was blown to bits chaos ensued. All sides accused each other. The communists accused the nationalists, the nationalists accused the communists of a false flag operation, and some of the old government accused all sides except theirs. Alongside this, allegations of mass voter fraud in the Newark, Falcon, and Liberty provinces came to light. 8 days after the election results were announced, hostilities broke out, and the nationalists occupied the capital. Fearing a fascist coup, the communists too rose up. Large worker militias across the nation occupied their factory towns and workplaces while the navy nearly in full mutinied to join the communists. FSSL's position was far from secure, however. Their holdings were like Swiss cheese, with large enclaves and exclaves everywhere. In the Eyes of FSSL's high command, securing the northern plains came for most. The flat terrain with large cities made it a target for any forces. To remedy the defensively poor terrain features, large parts of the navy were made to shell any forces they saw from the sea. Meanwhile, in the south, the communists and syndicalists worked together to fight off a large old government garrison.
FSSL wanted more than meagre gains so they made a deal with the farmers' army in the east whose power was centred around awnings. Annings would join the communists in exchange for great amounts of autonomy. This was a very favourable deal for awnings which had little to no chance of surviving a prolonged conflict, while for the FSSL this meant they got access to large quantities of well-trained manpower, with high morale.
The FSSL first put these troops to use as part of the northern garrison, where they'd secure the hinterlands and besiege Bradfort. This allowed the freed up FSSL forces to reinforce the Brook garrison further allowing them to completely overrun old government forces in Brook, a very mountainous region.
After the conquest of Brook and Bradfort, the frontlines mostly stabilised. Nationalist troops were unable to push in the mountainous south, nor on the great plains in the north, where the large FSSL navy would shore bombard any incoming army. FSSL took the stable frontlines to consolidate power over local left-wing governments. The mainland syndicalists and some left-wing Majani groups were practically forced to join the communists in full, while the syndicalists in the Saunders Farhold had to fight off incoming communist troops.
Fengári (2056-2309)
Introduction
Fengári is a very large and quite poor state in the Great desert on the far side of the moon. Fengari itself is an oligarchical state, being one of the many clear cut highly corrupt fake democracies on this side of the Milky Way. Fengári has gotten into frequent conflicts, border scuffles, and full-blown wars with its neighbours.
It masquerades as a socialist democracy but because of its track record is seen as a thorn in the side of other states that are or claim to be Socialist. This has left it quite isolated, only worsening its corruption.
Great Lakes Republic (2138-2300)
Introduction
The GLR is yet the only American Colony centred around the red sea. The nation split from Roosevelt in 2138 during a bloody Civil War after policemen had brutally cracked down on an Italian rights campaign near Osterfield. Roosevelt was known for its oppressive and authoritarian measures which made it hated amongst the locals of the modern-day GLR. The people here revolted, and Roosevelt looked to be experiencing a complete collapse, when US president, James H. Akinyemi, send forces to stabilise the region. This intervention would be the last major military mission of US soldiers within its colonies. Other than being the last direct US intervention in its Lunar Colonies, this intervention secured the GLR as an independent state.
Jefferson Republic (2035-2309)
Introduction
The Jefferson Republic is a large nation on the far side of the moon. Its official languages are English, Spanish, and Tagalog. The Jefferson Republic had a unique system of population growth. Unlike the indentured servitude contracts of the American Mandate of the Moon, or the complete open Migration of most states in the Grand Lunar Desert, the Jefferson used state allotment contracts.
These contracts were handed out to different states, which were often poor and economically undeveloped, who then had to fulfil certain worker quotas. While these workers certainly didn't get the entire range of rights regular citizens did, the exploited workers did get some rights.
Jefferson internally is divided into 3 Esperanto zones, 10 Latin zones, 1 Tagalog zone, and 13 English zones. These zones effectively function like provinces, with a moderate amount of local authority and representatives within Parliament, which represent both their national party and province.
Lincoln (2048-2309)
Introduction
Lincoln is a proud desert state which has its population centred around the Lance River and lake Ladin, a massive depression filled with water, sustained through the desert pavement forcing groundwater to surface here. Lincoln itself is in quite a sticky situation, not as rich as the Jefferson Republic, and bordering poorer trouble regions, Lincoln has a very difficult time at securing its borders from bandit groups.
Lincoln for its part hasn't been an angle. It has been posturing and sending its troops to "pacify", foreign borderlands. Often ending in villages being raided, plundered, and wiped off the map. One won't be surprised then when they hear Lincoln has gotten in frequent conflict with its southern neighbours of Fengári, and Grannos.
Luno (2051-2309)
Introduction
The Republic of Luno is a relatively small nation for its place on the map. Luno's economy primarily relies on agricultural production. Feeding many nations around it, it generally has good relations with all its neighbours despite its moderate amount of corruption. Luno has such high levels of corruption because it never was a proper American Colony, rather it is a conglomeration of smaller American wildstates.
New Horizon (2051-2309)
Introduction
New Horizon or Neuer Horizont is a joint American-AmericaBohemian venture stemming from the mid 21st century. It is often considered part of the "4 brotherly light". It shares a common flag motif with Unterland, die Neue Deutsche Republik, and Rochland, with which New Horizon has had long-standing close diplomatic and trade relations.
New Horizon has a healthy economy with some of its more important industries being chip making, UAV production, and the production of aeroplane parts. This has made it a prominent aerial weaponry supplier for such nations as the NDR, Silverhill, Hartenstein, and Allings.
North Gyre Republic (the Ombas Republic 1989-2154, NGR 2154-2309)
Introduction
The North Gyre Republic is an offshoot of the grander Gyr Republic, a large federation of mostly German and Austrian states. The federation was brought together by Sir C. Gyrston for whom both countries are named. The Gyre Republic saw increased amounts of regionalism during and after the American Mandate of the Moon. You see, the North Gyre Republic, while being led by the man who allowed for the Gyr Republic to become the grand power it is today, did not want to be part of the larger nation. 5 years after the death of the man who brought the Gyr Republic together, the NGR split off. This split was not all too easy, and after a referendum, the Gyr Republic still claims and de facto holds some southern lands, which effectively cut off Falchstadt from the Gyre Republic. Falchstadt now, despite officially being part of the NGR, functions entirely as its own country.
Rochland (2065-2309)
Introduction
Rochland is a moderately sized German-American nation. It was a combined venture of the German and American states. It's one of the more prosperous states on the far side, which comes from its bilingual nature and funding from two major colonisers.
Rochland was one of the main instigators of the Great Lunar War. It opened the second front Allings was dreading. Allings was already losing swathes of land in the far east, and its western garrisons were heavily weakened. Rochland exploited this by invading Allings south of Brevin. Though Rochland’s attacks cut deep into Allings’ territories, the initial push was less effective than originally hoped. Rochland’s high command reasoned its minimal gains were caused by the high morale of Allings' troops under the command of General Mathison Gandyn who was famed for his successes in the face of greater foes.
Rochland reluctantly made a deal with Grannos to share the eastern territories of Allings in a bid to overwhelm Allings. Sadly for Rochland, Grannos’ leadership was too excited to jump into a war. Their military leadership was inexperienced, while their troops used poorly kept old equipment. In the end, while the extra manpower did reinvigorate Rochland’s troops, the morale of Allings’forces stayed high as they were able to form large encirclements of Grannos’ troops.
Rochland felt forced to fix the military situation and committed a coup within Grannos, effectively turning it into a puppet state for the remainder of the war.
Roosevelt (2012-2309)
Introduction
Roosevelt is a large American Colony in the west. Similarly to the fraternal nation of Washington, Roosevelt was a late venture for proper American Colonies. Despite this, however, it grew to be the largest American Colony on the moon.
Though calling it an American Colony would be hiding its true past. The area now controlled by Roosevelt was rife with smaller colonial ventures, from Russian Colonies, to official Esperanto states, Bulgarian colonies, to even a Kazakh state. Even today large swathes of Roosevelt hold on to their native tongue. Sadly, ethnic minorities in Roosevelt have long been oppressed. Discrepancies in crime rates without further causal analysis have been used by the political elite to sow the seeds of Anglo-ethnic superiority. In the modern-day, a huge wedge separates the ethnic minorities within Roosevelt.
Roosevelt, on top of its terrible internal policies, is also tyrannical in its external policies. As the largest and most powerful nation in the area, it has often "intervened" in external affairs. Oftentimes under the veil of peacekeeping. In its latest aim to infamy, Roosevelt attempted to annex the eastern region of Allings. These stretches of land were relatively rich and had a long trade, culture, and political history with Roosevelt.
The military build-up was supported by false flag operations, in 2281, Roosevelt would annex a long existed disputed area that was de facto controlled by Allings. Alongside the annexation, it would instigate far-right militias with their epicentres in Shaftstoke, Beryl, and Amesover. The rebellion in Shaftstoke would fall within a month. Beryl and Amesover too were faltering. They no longer had transport links between each other, and were losing faster than expected to the Allings forces.
At the end of 2277, Roosevelt would send forces without iconography indicating their origin. The assault on Allings forces would result in the area controlled by rebel groups growing to encompass 60% of their respective provinces. Though fighting remained fears, the rebelling groups would completely collapse in 2285. Despite the collapse of the rebel regions, Roosevelt's military posturing would never die down and in the eventual war that came to be, the use of these rebel groups came to light. Deep knowledge of the terrain, hidden prepared bunkers, precleared areas for supply depots, and sabotaging agents fully established within Allings. All of these factors massively helped Roosevelt during its initial assault that started in January 2296 and stretched over the following few months.
Roosevelt's initial assault would halt to a grind right in front of Thangamangalam. This was a distinctly Hindi region. The brave men of the territorial defence of Thangamangalam would hold out for two and a half years. Holding the city for much of the time and sometimes being driven to nearby mountains. While Roosevelt's assault would continue, it certainly was declawed. The city was a regional transport hub, main railways, and roads all went through here. This made resupplying the front a massive task for Roosevelt, which only finished their own railways going around the city 7 months after the siege began.
Saunders Farhold (2172-2309)
Introduction
The Saunders Republic is, similar to the Silverhill Republic, known for its peaceful nature and developed education system. It is, however, unlike the Silverhill Republic, a Marxist democracy. Its political ideology and ideals cause it to have extreme lunaristic tendencies. This is why it is often referred to as a Lunarist state rather than an American state. Though in this listing, for its rich history with the other parts of the American Mandate of the Moon, it is identified as an American Colony.
The Saunders Republic also is known by a second name, The Meadow State. This name comes from its massive and beautiful meadows, and its history with beekeeping. Its flag in part represents this with 7 hexagons 6 surrounding the central one, however, this is not to be taken as its only meaning as the symbol has wider usage and also represents its high tech industries.
During the Lunar American Civil War
The Saunders Farhold proper never saw much conflict. From the start, 80% of the region was controlled by the syndicalists. And with it being disconnected from the mainland, its only real threat came later on in the war. This doesn't mean it saw no conflict in the early days, however. Within the first few weeks, the large city of Phyke which was still loyal to the old government was besieged. This siege went on for two and a half months. On the other side of the Saunders Farhold, the Syndicalists had to fight against militant Majani extremists. With some pockets of these Majani extremists lasting for over 6 years.
The largest threat came when the Communists attempted to strengthen their position as leading all other leftist groups, while mainland syndicalists were unable to reject their posturing, the Saunders Farhold went their own way. The Communists would end up attempting 2 large naval assaults on the Saunders Farhold, one on Urbohyl, and one on New Leeds. These assaults ended up being so controversial within the left that they ended up forcing the abdication of the war hero and leader of the communists, Marko Brittenhouse.
Washington (2011-2309)
Introduction
Washington, compared to most other proper American Colonies, was a late venture. Washington was originally established north of the Kepler Sea with settlers quickly expanding over the Kepler Sea coast. Many settlers also moved to the nearby peninsula which jutted up directly through the Kepler Sea. Though these people were given a referendum on if they wished to be part of Washington or independent, they went with their northern neighbours.
Washington is named for an early president of America, it thus isn't surprising that many in Washington pride themselves on the strong democratic principles of the country.
Vallern (2002-2309)
Introduction
Vallern, while often described as a wild state, is better referred to as a pseudo wild state. Vallern started off as a band of farming villages that united in their efforts to stave off any bandits. Later when it grew in prominence, Vallern was integrated into the American Lunar Colonisation Agency (ALCA). It thus unlike other true wild states received large quantities of equipment and manpower, without having to rely on passive immigration and self-reliant production. This however also left it with an industry that left much to be desired. Though this was somewhat rectified with later arms deals with the Falkings Republic.
The nation at its birth had a surprising focus on religion for Lunar States, though In recent years this has declined a lot. A great shift in the population has produced a split between the countryside and the Japanese dominated city landscape.
