A Note from Ms. Palmer, KJHS Principal
Dear Kingsley families,
It is hard to believe that it is already October! As we roll into fall, it is exciting to see not only the vibrancy of the fall colors, but also the vibrancy of our KJHS student body in action. Whether it is engaging learning activities, spontaneous lunch dance parties, athletic events, or club activities, your children make our work a rewarding endeavor. This, coupled with our partnership with our Kingsley families, has led to a great start to the school year. Thank you for all you do to support the Kingsley staff!
Ms. Palmer
Team Theme Dress Up Day : October 31
In lieu of costumes, KJHS grade level teams will be having dress up themes on Monday, October 31st. The team with the most students and staff dressed in theme costumes will win a prize.
KJHS PTO Spirit Wear Sale
The Kingsley PTO has a new online Spirit Store open now through November 4th! Check out this LINK to see what is available and place your order.
All items purchased will be delivered to the school and will be available for pick up by December 1st. If you select the GIFT option during checkout, your items will be set aside for an adult to pick up in the office for those who want to surprise their children for the holidays. All proceeds from these orders will be used by PTO to support the students and programs at KJHS. Happy shopping!
K Cart Donations
One of the main components of our PBIS Tier 1 incentive system is our K Cart. The K Cart is fully run by Mr. Oates' BELT classes, who do things like budgeting, supply stocking, marketing, and more. Kingsley students can purchase items from the K Cart using K Cash they earn by making good decisions here at school. To help offset the costs of stocking the K Cart, we are asking parents to make donations. The BELT students have created a list of items that can be acquired via Amazon and will be shipped directly to the school. Thank you in advance for your support of the school-wide, student run program!
Early Release : October 26
Unit 5 has an early release on Wednesday, October 26. KJHS students will be released from school at 11:45 am. Sack lunches will be provided free of charge for those students wanting one.
October 26 is also our first quarter PBIS school-wide celebration. Students who met behavior expectations for the first quarter will enjoy a movie with their team. Students who did not fulfill behavior expectations will be meeting with staff to talk about what missteps were made and how to make better choices in the future.
Family-Teacher Conferences : November 7
Family-Teacher Conference Day is Monday, November 7th. KJHS is offering both in person and virtual conference options. For more information, see the Kingsley Family - Teacher Conference Information Sheet.
Stream Team Support
The Kingsley Stream Team does the live streaming for many of our sporting events. They would like to purchase new cameras in order to help improve the viewing experience on the Kingsley Activities YouTube page for sporting and music events. Donations and advertising dollars will help them reach their goal. If you are interested in advertising on their channel, check out their 2022-23 advertising pricing guide. Interested in making a donation? Contact us. Please note that State Farm employees often can have their donations matched.
Infraction Tracker
As teachers notice unwanted student behavior here at school, they will begin to note them on what we call our "Infraction Tracker". This helps us monitor student behavior and identify students who need more support in making good choices. After 3 infractions, a family will be notified of the issues that staff is witnessing. These infractions also determine whether or not students qualify for team and school-wide rewards. Students were introduced to the Infraction Tracker in late August/early September so they are clear on what the expectations for behavior and reward are here at KJHS.
We have added the following clubs to our extensive list of participation options for students here at Kingsley Junior High School:
Drama (Sponsored by Ms. Peterson; First meeting on 10/26, 3:45 - 4:45 pm in Room 100)
Dungeons & Dragons (Sponsored by Mrs. Holland)
Rubix Cube Club (Sponsored by Mr. Rich; Meets on the 1st & 3rd Wednesday of each month from 3:45 - 4:30 pm in room 901)
Book Fair: 10/31 - 11/7
The Scholastic Book Fair will kick off Monday, Oct. 31st and will run through P/T conference day on Nov. 7th.
Our October PBIS Cougar P.R.I.D.E theme is Integrity! We are focusing this month on how we Cougars can exhibit integrity in everything that we do.
There is an all school cafeteria competition for the month of October. Each grade level starts with 1,000 points. The challenge is to keep as many points as possible. Grade levels lose points for exhibiting unwanted behaviors in the cafeteria during the lunch hour. Here are the behaviors students lose points for: cell phone/electronics use, excessive volume, being out of seats unnecessarily, messy tables, untucked chairs, and being tardy to lunch. If a grade level's point balance falls below 200 points, they will be given the opportunity to earn back points through service.
The winning class will be awarded a lunch party with a dj on Friday, November 11th.
Referendum Information
To put Unit 5 on more stable financial footing and ensure our students continue to have access to the quality education they deserve, Unit 5 will have a referendum on the ballot in the upcoming November 8 election.
Here is a link to a presentation by Superintendent Weikle explaining some factual information regarding the referendum.
If successful, Unit 5 will be able to:
Responsibly Solve Unit 5's Financial Challenges
Avoid Having to Increase Class Sizes, Decrease Staff, or Cut Programs
Provide Safer and Improved Learning Environments for All Students
To learn more about the proposed plans, Unit 5 is hosting information sessions:
Tuesday, October 11, 6 p.m. - Normal Community High School
Tuesday, October 25, 6 p.m. - Virtual (information on signup will come closer to the date)
For more information, please see the Unit 5 Referendum Information site.
Please call (309)557-4000 district@unit5.org if you have questions.
Winter is coming and so is the possibility of inclement weather. Please click here to view the plan for e-Learning/Snow Days/Inclement Weather Days.
From time to time, a student safety issue comes up that we feel we need our KJ families need to be aware of and this is such an issue. There is a new version of fentanyl targeting school aged students. The narcotic is designed to look like candy, often described as looking like Sweet Tarts. The DEA has issued an alert that can be reviewed here and there is an image of the candy in the article. They are generally stamped with the letter 'M' or the number '30'.
We would like to be clear that we have not seen any evidence of this at Kingsley. We just want to make families aware as this is a highly dangerous substance and is being marketed to target school aged students, especially through platforms like SnapChat.
School fees were due on October 1st. Just a reminder, Unit 5 is now using My School Bucks to pay all school related fees except for lunch fees. Lunch fees can be paid through Infinite Campus (click on the "Food Service" link). Families can set up a My School Bucks account by visiting MySchoolBucks.com. Select "Sign Up for Free" and follow the prompts to create an account. Be sure to select a state and school district so you can then find your student.
We will be hosting a parent round table on Thursday, October 20 at 6:00 pm in the KJHS IMC. This is an opportunity for parents to share their insights about the happenings in the Kingsley community with KJHS administration. We look forward to meeting with you!
Incoming students & families often ask "how can my child get involved & participate in the Kingsley community?" Great question!
Off of the main page of the Kingsley website, there is an "extracurriculars" page with our club and activity information. For students, we post club information in the daily announcements & on "What's Kickin' at Kingsley?" bulletin boards throughout the school. Here is a list of our current clubs:
