A Note from Ms. Palmer, KJHS Principal
Dear Kingsley families,
And just like that, it's May! I want to thank all of you for what has been an amazing first year as principal here at Kingsley Junior High School. It has been an extraordinary privilege to watch your children develop over the year. They are an incredibly talented group of young people and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. I have enjoyed getting to know them during this school year, experiencing their smiles and, on occasion, their tears. Through it all, please know that I deeply believe in them and what they have to offer this world. I have enjoyed meeting and getting to know so many of you and I thank you for trusting us with your children. Again, thank you for a wonderful school year!
Ms. Palmer
The final PTO meeting of the school year is Monday, May 22nd, at 6:30 pm in the KJHS IMC. Join us as we plan for the 23-24 school year!
May 8th-12th is Teacher Appreciation Week and the KJHS PTO has plans to show the Cougar staff how much we appreciate all they do for our kids. PTO is in need of several items and monetary donations to accompany the meals being supplied by several local restaurants. Please check out this SIGN UP for more information and to make a donation. All donations are due in the KJHS Main Office by 4pm on Friday, May 5th.
Thank you for your support of Kingsley Junior High!

KJHS PBIS Field Day is Monday, May 22nd, during 6th - 8th hours. The event will feature inflatables, Kona Ice, and much more! In order to cover costs, KJHS teams will be collecting $5 from students. KJHS will cover the cost of any student who cannot afford the fee. If your family would like to donate additional money to help cover student fees, please feel free to send additional money with your student.
The Child Protection Network is having its annual CASAnova Competition for the Crown fundraiser and Ms. Palmer is one of the "CASAnovas" this year. For those of you who don't know, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) works with children in McLean County who have been victims of abuse. They walk with them through the entire legal process, from preliminary interviews to court appearances. This organization has assisted several Unit 5 students and we are raising money to help this community partner.
If you would be interested in supporting this outstanding organization (and helping us meet the fundraising goal), please consider visiting Ms. Palmer's CASAnova page and voting by donation. Thanks so much!

As our 8th grade students choose high school classes for next year, they encounter a new option: Honors Courses. As part of this process, teachers are asked to make advanced course recommendations for students. This coming year, the district is also implementing automatic enrollment, which reflects a change in the Illinois School Code.
Automatic enrollment is an addition to school code that amends the current Accelerated Placement Act and Unit 5’s adopted accelerated placement policy. It specifies that a school district’s accelerated placement policy allow for the automatic enrollment in the following school term of a student into the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework if the student meets or exceeds state standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, or Science on a state assessment.
The most recent state assessment results should be used to determine whether a student meets or exceeds state standards. These may include:
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) scores for Level 4: Met Expectations and Level 5: Exceeded Expectations are designated as “meeting or exceeding state standards” for Grades 3-8.
The results from a locally selected, nationally normed assessment may be used instead of the state assessment for other high school grades if those results are the most recent.
KJHS guidance counselors and 8th grade teachers have reviewed those students impacted by this policy and those students have been notified of their placement in honors courses for next year. Families are always welcome to decline placement in honors courses if they so desire. If you have questions about your student's course placement for next year, please feel free to contact the KJHS Guidance Office at (309) 557 -4849.
The Unit 5 high schools are offering several camps this summer. Check them out!
