April 2023

A Note from Ms. Palmer, KJHS Principal

Dear Kingsley families,

Welcome back from Spring Break! Believe or not, we are now in the final 8 weeks of the 22-23 school year and that brings a time of transition to Kingsley Junior High School as we look to welcome the KJHS Class of 2026 and say "good bye and good luck" to the KJHS Class of 2023. The end of the school year holds some fun and exciting activities for the KJHS student body and we're looking forward to a strong finish to the school year.

I want to bring a few things to your attention. First, please remember that Friday, April 7th, is an early release day (11:45 am) and Monday, April 10th, is a School Improvement Day so there is no student attendance. Second, if you have students returning to Unit 5 next year and have not yet completed online registration, please consider doing that soon. Staffing decisions are being made based on projected enrollments and online registration contributes to those student counts. Finally, I know the recent referendum had families facing some difficult decisions. However you voted, I appreciate the thought and consideration that played into your decision.

As I've said so many times this year, thank you so much for your continued support. Your partnership and encouragement continue to be an inspiration to the KJHS staff. Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Palmer

Course Acceleration

As our 8th grade students choose high school classes for next year, they encounter a new option:  Honors Courses.  As part of this process, teachers are asked to make advanced course recommendations for students. This coming year, the district is also implementing automatic enrollment, which reflects a change in the Illinois School Code.

Automatic enrollment is an addition to school code that amends the current Accelerated Placement Act and Unit 5’s adopted accelerated placement policy.  It specifies that a school district’s accelerated placement policy allow for the automatic enrollment in the following school term of a student into the next most rigorous level of advanced coursework if the student meets or exceeds state standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, or Science on a state assessment.

The most recent state assessment results should be used to determine whether a student meets or exceeds state standards. These may include:

KJHS guidance counselors and 8th grade teachers have reviewed those students impacted by this policy and those students have been notified of their placement in honors courses for next year. Families are always welcome to decline placement in honors courses if they so desire. If you have questions about your student's course placement for next year, please feel free to contact the KJHS Guidance Office at (309) 557 -4849.
