A Note from Ms. Palmer, KJHS Principal
Dear Kingsley families,
Our spring semester is off to a chilly but amazing start! Last week featured a PBIS assembly where students and staff competed in minute to win it games. It was such a great way to end the first week of the second semester. This semester is jam packed as we are not only continuing great teaching and learning on a daily basis, we will also be saying good-bye to the KJHS Class of 2025 and welcoming the KJHS Class of 2028. The KJHS staff has planned some amazing experiences for our students and we look forward to a great remainder of the school year. KJHS is hosting several athletic, music, and extracurricular events this spring and we look forward to you joining us to watch our KJHS students in action. You will be amazed at the talent of our student body!
Ms. Palmer
We are excited to share that Kelly Fitzgerald has been named the KJHS Principal for the 25-26 school year. Mrs. Fitzgerald brings 20 years of diverse experience in education. She has worked at various levels, including the collegiate level, where she served as a Women's Volleyball Coach, Senior Women's Administrator, and Director of Health and Wellness. At the high school level, she was the Director of Athletics before transitioning to the role of Assistant Principal, where she oversaw discipline, professional development, and various daily activities. In her first year in Unit 5 as an administrator, she was named Associate Principal at Chiddix Junior High School, where she actively engaged in numerous task forces aimed at improving the school environment. Throughout the year, she took on a leadership role in initiatives focused on enhancing student culture, fostering a positive atmosphere for all learners, and developing effective strategies for student discipline. Her contributions were instrumental in promoting a sense of community and mutual respect among students and staff alike. Currently, Mrs. Fitzgerald is the Principal at Carlock Elementary, where she has made significant contributions to the school community. Additionally, she currently serves on the Suicide Prevention District Task Force, as a member of the Student Voice Strand in DELT, and as part of the PCL District Task Force.
Mrs. Fitzgerald's educational philosophy focuses on creating and maintaining a nurturing and inclusive environment in which students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. "I am committed to fostering student growth, leadership, and opportunities for all," she stated.
A graduate of St. Xavier University, Mrs. Fitzgerald earned her Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences in 2001 and her Master's in Educational Administration in 2004. While at St. Xavier, she was part of the Women's Volleyball Team and was named an All-American in her senior year. Outside of her professional life, Mrs. Fitzgerald enjoys spending time with her husband, John, and their children, Colton (11) and Vivian (9). Family activities are a cherished part of her life, and they enjoy spending time together.
Mrs. Fitzgerald looks forward to meeting the KJHS staff, students, and families. She encourages anyone who wishes to reach out to her to do so via email at fitzgeke@unit5.org.
The KJHS K Cart is a key component in the KJHS PBIS reward system. Operated by 8th grade BELT students, the K Cart provides the opportunity for students to use K Cash (earned by exhibiting appropriate behavior in the classroom) to purchase items such as fidgets, bracelets, candy, soda, etc. The K Cart operates 10 weeks a semester and costs approximately $1500-$2000/semester to operate. The KJHS PTO supports the K Cart with a generous $1000/semester donation and the remainder of the funds come from monetary and product donations. If you would like to donate to the K Cart, please visit their Amazon wish list or drop off cash/check at the KJHS Main Office. The K Cart will begin second semester operations on February 7 .
Over the past few years, KJHS has hosted an 8th grade dance as one of the closing activities of the school year. Last year, the event was an activity night that included dancing as well as numerous other activities. This event is held in May and is planned/organized by the 8th grade parents. If you would like to be involved on the 8th grade dance planning committee, please let Ms. Palmer (palmere@unit5.org) know by the end of January. If we do not have parent volunteers, we will not be holding the dance.
PBIS PRIDE theme for December was Excellence Through a lesson and discussions in advisory, students and staff discussed how they were doing towards their goals set in November and what it means to demonstrate excellence. January's PRIDE theme is Participation so please encourage your student to fully participate in their learning.
The Grove Elementary Staff will be hosting an upcoming event to honor and celebrate Mrs. Amy Burns Moore and her dedication to education. The 1st Annual Amy Burns Moore Scholarship Gator Games will be held on March 2, 2025, from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Bloomington Tennis & Turf. Amy was an avid tennis player and loved all sports. In honor of Amy’s dedication to furthering her education, the Grove staff would like to raise money to provide scholarships to existing Unit 5 staff members who are in the process of continuing their education. They are excited to honor her with an opportunity for members of our community to play pickleball and kickball. For more information on how your family can be involved, please check out the information flyer.

Winter is definitely upon us and, as such, there may be days where inclement weather makes getting to school challenging. In such cases, Unit 5 may determine that for safety reasons, a remote learning day is in order. When this happens, students and families will be notified via email and/or text and students will be directed to refer to the KJHS e Learning Plans to know what their schedule is and how to access their classes. These plans will also be posted on the KJHS web site for accessibility as well.
KJHS is looking for individuals who are interested in being office substitutes for times when our office staff needs to be absent. Most of the work involves answering the phone and greeting people entering the building. Substitute office workers are paid and will be provided with training. If you are interested, please contact Elisa Palmer (palmere@unit5. org) for details on how to apply.
Did you know that KJHS has its own dedicated Promise Council organization? The Kingsley Promise Council is dedicated to removing barriers to learning such as:
Meeting the physical needs of students when they stand in the way of academic achievement
Helping schools help kids - one child at a time
Providing adult mentors for students
Increasing opportunities for parental engagement
There are two current opportunities for parents and community members to get involved:
1. Add your name to the KJHS Promise Council Shout-Out list.
2. Help meet the physical needs of KJHS students by purchasing items off the KJHS Promise Council Amazon wishlist (all items are sent directly to the school).
If you'd like to find out more about Promise Council, visit https://www.facebook.com/PromiseCouncil/.
Attendance is key to academic success. Students who miss two days a month (that's once every other week) this year will miss...
20 days of school
30 hours of math
60 hours of reading and writing
Over one year of school by graduation

Just a couple of updates re KJHS social media...
We are now actively posting to our Kingsley Junior High School Facebook page. Thank you for your patience as we worked through some of the changes with Meta taking over Facebook.
Postings on our social media are dependent on coaches and teachers sending information to Ms. Palmer. If you feel an activity is being left out, please reach to the coach or teacher and encourage them to send Ms. Palmer information/updates to post.
Attendance at extracurricular events is a privilege, not a right, and students who cannot maintain appropriate behavior during the school day forfeit the privilege of attending after school events at KJHS. As such, students who earn an out of school suspension or an in school suspension during the second quarter of the 24-25 school year will be placed on social probation for the remainder of the quarter and cannot attend any extracurricular events unless they are a participant in the event itself. Social probation may also be issued to students who earn lunch detentions for the same offense on multiple occasions. Issuance of social probation will be communicated to both the student and the family by the issuing administrator.

Given the fact that we have over 700 students in our KJHS community, conflicts are bound to occur. If your student is experiencing an issue with another student and needs adult assistance to help work things out, please encourage them to complete the "What's Up Kingsley?" form. This will alert the adults in the building to the issue and we will direct the students involved to the KJHS resource best suited to the conflict. If your student is struggling to express the issue, please notify their AP and they follow up with your student.
Knowing who to contact at KJHS about certain issues can be challenging. We hope this mini-guide helps as to who to contact first when you are needing assistance.
