A Note from Ms. Palmer, KJHS Principal
Dear Kingsley families,
We have had a great start to our second semester! Your students returned to KJHS ready to learn and our staff welcomed them back with smiles and engaging activities. If you haven't already done so, I highly encourage you to follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and/or Twitter as we post about what's happening at KJHS on a regular basis. Our social media is a great way to experience the vibrant, active learning community that is KJHS.
Speaking of being active, KJHS is the host site for several extracurricular events during the winter months. We have been so pleased to see many of you in attendance and hope to see many more of you in the weeks ahead. I have enjoyed meeting many of you and appreciate your support of our staff and students. Here's to a great second semester!
Ms. Palmer
The state of Illinois requires schools to ask parents, students, and staff to complete the 5 Essentials Survey every year. You will be receiving a message from the district on January 23rd with more information. We ask that you complete this survey as completion rates impact funds for KJHS.
January's PBIS PRIDE letter of the month is P for Participate. We are encouraging all students to engage in school activities. We have many club options for students to choose from and many of them are still taking new participants. We are also hosting many sports competitions. Check out our school calendar for more details.
Thank you so much for your donations of gift cards in December! Your generosity made the last week of school that much brighter for the KJHS staff.
The next PTO meeting is Monday, January 23rd, at 6:30 pm in the KJHS IMC. Can't attend in person? Join us virtually through Zoom!
Stream Team Support
The Kingsley Stream Team does the live streaming for many of our sporting events. They would like to purchase new cameras in order to help improve the viewing experience on the Kingsley Activities YouTube page for sporting and music events. Donations and advertising dollars will help them reach their goal. If you are interested in advertising on their channel, check out their 2022-23 advertising pricing guide. Interested in making a donation? Contact us. Please note that State Farm employees often can have their donations matched.
As part of our MTSS process, the core teams meet every quarter with the principal, interventionists, guidance counselors, social worker, and school psychologists to discuss students' learning needs. Sometimes this leads to students being placed in a class we refer to as an intervention. There are different kinds of interventions and they address things such as math skills, writing skills, reading skills, social skills, and executive functions. If your student is identified as being recommended for an academic intervention, you will receive a letter informing you of the recommendation and what it means for your student's schedule. You are always free to ask for more information or deline the intervention if you so desire.
If you are looking for a resource to help you with keeping your student safe online, check out Officer Gomez on Facebook or on YouTube. He posts regularly about online dangers and how families can help guide kids to use social media and other online resources safely.
It's not too late to order something off of the our KJHS Staff Wish List. These are items requested by teachers that we would normally purchase through school improvement grant funds. However, our school improvement grant for the 2022-23 school year was about 60% less than last year and came with a high number of restrictions so we are asking for assistance in purchasing these items. Anything you can provide would be greatly appreciated. All of these materials are used directly by students in the classroom. Not sure what to order? Feel free to order an Amazon gift card instead and our staff can shop for themselves. Thanks to all of you who have already donated! Your generosity really brightened the end of the semester for our staff!
One of the things the KJHS staff examined during our January 23rd institute day was behavior trends during the Fall 2022 semester. In Fall 2022, KJHS students received the most referrals for the following actions: disruptive behavior (18%), insubordination/noncompliance (13.4%), and excessive tardies (9.4%). We are continuing to work with students on respecting the learning environment, following staff directives, and getting to class on time so they can fully engage in learning. We appreciate your continued support as we partner to guide students to become independent, engaged learners.
Spring 2023 Behavior Reminders
The admin team reviewed behavior expectations with students during lunch on Wednesday, 1/4/23, and we wanted to share some of the highlights of that conversation with you. Here are the highlights...
No winter coats or blankets are to worn to class or in the cafeteria. These items should be left in lockers.
Please remember that any medications need to be on file with the nurse. This includes over the counter meds like Tylenol and Advil.
Pepper spray and mace are not only not allowed at school, it is illegal for minors to be in possession of such items.
Students are not to bring items such as large bags of chips, coffee/tea/hot drinks, polar pops/large sodas, or outside food orders to school. We are having issues with spillage in the hallway, classrooms, and lockers as well as the "sharing frenzy" with large food bags.
RESET is KJHS's in-school suspension program. During their time in RESET, students complete reflections regarding the behaviors that led to them being assigned to RESET as well as undergoing a restorative conference with the RESET coordinator, Mr. Thompson, and other individuals as deemed necessary by administration. Students may be assigned to RESET as a consequence or as a result of returning to school from an out of school suspension.
