One of the first questions that comes up in 2020 (someday we won't have to ask ourselves these questions!) is...."will the school photo be with mask on or mask off?" That decision is up to families and students. So how will it work? Students will have their masks on while the photographer positions them for the photo. Right before the photo, students may take their mask off or if your family prefers, your student may leave it on, for the school picture.
When is Picture Day?
Online Students: Friday, November 13 & Monday, November 16
Online students are welcome to have their photo taken each day from 8:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.
For online families who want a school photo and want to minimize exposure to others, we reserved times each day for online students only to have their photos taken. From 9:40-10:20 a.m. and 3-3:45 p.m.
Students may come to the main entrance where a staff member will certify their wellness prior to entry. To minimize the number of people in the school, we ask that parents not enter the school at this time.
In-person, A-K, Students: Monday, November 16 during P.E. or Health class
In-person, L-Z Students: Friday, November 13 during P.E. or Health class
How do we order school pictures?
Preorder online by November 12 at: www.mylifetouch.com
Picture Day ID: EVTCHHQXN
Print a paper order form here.
A hard copy of the paper order form will be sent home with in-person students the week of November 2.
If online students prefer to order using a paper order form, you are welcome to pick one up at Kingsley on a school day between 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
At the secondary level, Unit 5 will administer the MAP test to students who are online-only and to students who are in-person. Students participate in a math and a reading MAP assessment. The typical time for each assessment is 45-60 minutes although some students finish earlier or take a little longer.
How is MAP used for all students?
MAP scores provide insight into which students need extra support in reading and math.
For 8th graders, MAP scores will be used as a part of high school course placement.
MAP scores are one way to uncover gaps and strengths for each student.

With cold weather & the weight of backpacks, in-person students need lockers. We have assigned students to every other locker based on their attendance days. Therefore, while we are on the blended/hybrid schedule, there will be a locker between each student to increase distance between students.
If later in the school year, families of online students elect for in-person learning we will assign lockers for them at that time.
Are students required to use their locker? Locker use is an option and is not required. Due to COVID safety guidance, students are welcome to carry belongings in their backpacks during the 20-21 school year.
When can students begin using lockers? The next time your child comes to school.
Where can we find their locker number? Locker numbers are viewable in Infinite Campus Student and Parent Portal (quick video here) or through the Infinite Campus App here.
Safety first: We will provide some guidance about locker visits to minimize crowding that commonly occurs around lockers. Due to COVID safety guidelines, students are allowed to carry backpacks this year to minimize locker visits and crowding. While we love the creativity of interior locker decorations, we will not schedule locker decoration times for now.
How many locks? That depends on you! Short term, students need one lock for their hallway locker. Eventually, maybe not until next year....students will have a P.E. locker too. So at some point, students will need two lockers again. #hope
Purchasing a lock(s):
You are welcome to purchase a lock at any store.
Another option is to purchase a pair of locks with the same combination for $12 from us.
What are advantages of purchasing locks from KJHS?
If there is a problem with a lock, any U5 secondary school will replace it the same day at no cost - even in high school!
If your child forgets the combination, which happens often over a break, we can look up the combination for you.
If you purchase a lock from the store and students forget their combination (this happens often), we cannot help them which sometimes results in the lock needing to be cut off.
How do you purchase a lock from us?
Send a check payable to KJHS for $12 to Kingsley with your child.
Send the exact change of $12 to school with your child.
Pay online through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Here is the long list of clicks: From the IC Parent Portal, click "More," then "Quick Links," then "RevTrack Payment" log in, then "Make a Payment," then "Optional Fees." You will select the fee you want to add and submit payment.
We will distribute locks to your student during their first core class time the next time your child is in-person.
Before December 18, yearbooks may be pre-ordered here.
Pre-order cost is $25. After December 18, yearbook cost is $30.
NEW in 20-21: Due to our delayed start, the yearbook for all U5 middle schools will be delivered in August 2021. This follows the pattern U5 high schools have followed for some time and was necessary to get as much content in the yearbook as possible.
We can help! Please call us at 309-557-4407 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on school days. If you need a device or charger swap, we will get the items ready for you to pick up. You can also email Ms. Ambrose at ambrosev@unit5.org.
Virtual Lunch? We would love to connect with you! How about a synchronous lunch with KJHS staff next Thursday, November 5, from 12-12:30? If you'd like to join us for a virtual lunch, email Ms. Eaton at eatonbk@unit5.org for the Google Classroom code.
Photos Anyone? It is easy for us to quickly grab a photo of students who are in-person and we would love to feature you and your learning on our social media pages! If you are willing, please ask your parents to send a photo of you in your learning space to Ms. France at francesm@unit5.org.
School Photos or Yearbooks? Details are in the main body of this newsletter. Look at the drop down menus.
If a student sees or hears something of concern, we encourage them to report it to us. We appreciate them helping us keep the Kingsley community a physically and emotionally safe place!
How do students report concerning things they see or hear? The online version of the "What's Up Kingsley?" form is linked under the "Administration" tab and the "Frequently Used Links" area of the KJHS website and teachers have paper copies.
How do students know about the "What's Up Kingsley?" reporting option? Staff shared this video and discussed how to get help for a friend or for themselves.
On in-person learning days & prior to entering the building, parents must certify their child's wellness to avoid interruptions to your child's learning.
How do I certify my child's wellness? Self certify your child's wellness through the "Unit 5 Safe" App or on the web or on paper (English, Spanish or French).
What happens when parents do not self certify their child?
A report updates every 15 minutes so we run it daily at 8:45 a.m. when the school day begins.
Administrators, school counselors or other staff immediately go to first hour classes and ask students who's wellness is not certified by families to come into the hall so an administrator can certify their wellness.
Administrators, school counselors or other staff ask students the questions that are on the wellness certification options above and take their temperature before a student is allowed to return to class.
Please help us avoid interrupting your child's first hour learning opportunities by certifying their wellness prior to entering the school on in-person learning days.
