It is the responsibility of the college to assist students in developing a commitment to the profession and following a professional code of conduct. A variety of opportunities for professional growth are presented throughout the course of the ADN program at TSTC. A framework of professional behavior based on legal, ethical, and moral standards is presented to the student throughout the program.
Students must demonstrate integration of a professional code of conduct into their professional practice. Student action plans serve as a communication method for remediation, absenteeism, status in course, and disciplinary issues.
Student action plans are communication tools used within the TSTC nursing programs for various reasons. These documents serve as a communication method for remediation, absenteeism, status in course, and disciplinary issues. Therefore, these documents should not be necessarily viewed as a “negative” focus unless it is of discipline in nature. These tools help identify areas of concern and/or weakness with a plan of action to assist the student to remediate on such topics.
When a student violates the code of conduct, or performance does not satisfactorily meet the objectives/requirements of the program, a Student Action Plan (SAP) will be given to the student. There are two different types of action plans: Informative and Disciplinary.
Informative Student Action Plans will be given for (but are not limited to):
More than one zero in one week
Tardy to class or clinical
Uniform violations unrelated to safety
Cell phones in class/lab
Disciplinary Student Action Plans will be given for (but are not limited to):
Issues related to behavioral misconduct
Lack of professionalism (i.e. cell phones in the clinical setting, etc.)
Multiple failing clinical grades
Academic dishonesty
HIPAA violations
If the student receives three (3) Informative SAPs, that shall equal one (1) Disciplinary SAP. Two (2) Disciplinary SAPs shall result in a meeting with the faculty, Program Team Lead, Program Director, and/or Associate Provost. This may result in termination from the Program.
Any situation that severely threatens the safety of a patient, exhibits a lack of moral character, demonstrates an extreme lack of professionalism or good judgment, and/or is a violation of policies of TSTC or clinical facility may result in immediate termination from the program.
