DIDACTIC:
There are no regularly scheduled lecture times. Students in the ADN Program may meet for scheduled simulation activities, classroom reviews, and clinical, and/or possibly proctored exams. The student will be required to check in for virtual meetings and if/when reporting to the lab for any simulations.
Regular attendance is necessary for satisfactory achievement. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to attend and/or complete all the online (live or recorded session) lectures and lessons. If a student is unable to attend class or complete scheduled assignments, a faculty member must be notified. Students should check school email daily.
All students are required to attend all scheduled activities punctually. If a student is late for more than 10 minutes, the student will have 10 points deducted from the grade for each lab they arrive tardy. The student may or may not be allowed to stay for the activity and may have to reschedule the missed exam or lab/skills activity.
If a student is unable to attend a proctored exam/simulation event, a faculty member must be notified at least one (1) hour prior to the start of scheduled activity time. Lack of notification will result in the student being documented in a student action plan. Makeup events will be scheduled at the instructor’s discretion.
In order to receive a makeup assignment, the student must provide the instructor with a doctor’s excuse (for self or child). The student will not have any deduction of points with an excuse provided. If the absence is due to an unforeseen circumstance, a form of documentation of absence must be provided (ex: picture of flood waters, car accident, flat tire with receipt for tire, etc.). An assignment will be provided, and a 10 point deduction will be given. Makeup assignments will not be given for failure to plan ahead (ex: no child care, waking up late) and the student will receive a zero for the lab day. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by faculty on an individual basis.
In regard to class participation per level or individual course, any student not completing an assignment will receive a zero for the assignment. If more than one zero per unit is given, the student will receive a student action plan (SAP). If the student has zeros for more than one unit (multiple zeros in multiple two-week sessions), the student will receive an informative action plan. Per the instructor’s discretion, the reception of this SAP, along with a grade of zero for participation, can result in an Incomplete (I) grade for the course or an inability for the student to progress in the program.
In the event that any scheduled simulation is missed, the activity can NOT be replaced, and the student will receive a zero. Simulation lab exercises are planned with the group/team concept in mind. These are fun, enriched events that hold a wealth of learning opportunities; attendance and participation is crucial.
A ‘ticket to lab’ in the form of a concept map or other pre-lab assignment is required to attend all labs to ensure understanding of the topics prior to arrival. Arrival to all scheduled labs without a completed concept map or other pre-lab assignment will result in the student receiving a zero for the 25% of the concept map/pre-lab assignment and only receiving a maximum of 75% of the simulation/lab grade and the student be required to remain in the scheduled lab for the day.
Students will come to class for Simulation lab, classroom reviews, proctored exams, etc. when scheduled in TSTC ADN Program approved uniform only (see the Clinical Dress Code for complete explanation).
CLINICAL:
Clinical absences should not exceed one day of clinical per course per semester. Any absences exceeding the one day per course will be discussed by the faculty, program team lead, and/or program director and may result in the student being dropped from the course.
Tardies: Any arrival to clinical 30 minutes past the scheduled clinical time will be counted as 1 full day’s absence. No half-day absences are allowed. The student will NOT be allowed to remain in the clinical area for that day.
EXAMPLE:
Scheduled clinical time: 6:45 a.m.
Tardy: Arrival between 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m.
Absence: Arrival after 7:15 a.m.
THREE (3) TARDIES (in class or clinical) CONSTITUTES AN ABSENCE.
Students are expected to be at ALL scheduled clinical rotations. If a student is unable to attend clinical, a faculty member must be notified at least one (1) hour prior to the start of scheduled clinical time. Lack of notification will result in the documentation of a student action plan. An excuse of “I don’t know my instructor’s number,” will not be honored.
In order to receive a makeup assignment, the student must provide the instructor with a doctor’s excuse (for self or child) or other form of documentation of absence (ex: picture of flood waters, car accident, flat tire with receipt for tire, etc.). Makeup assignments will not be given for failure to plan ahead (ex: no child care, waking up late) and the student will receive a zero for the clinical day. Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by faculty on an individual basis.
No Call/No Show: Students are expected to call their clinical instructor for an absence. Failure to call the instructor within 30 minutes of clinical start time will be considered a “No Call/No Show”. One (1) “no call, no show” will result in a grade of zero. A student action plan (SAP) will be immediately initiated. Two “No Call/No Shows” for clinical may result in termination from the program. A doctor's clearance is required for all illnesses or health conditions that put the student or faculty, classmates, and patients at risk.
