Bereavement Policy

The TSTC Associate Degree Nursing Program recognizes that a time of bereavement is exceedingly difficult for a student.  TSTC will excuse the student for bereavement and funeral leave for the periods of time listed below.  A copy of the obituary will be required to be submitted to the instructor within three days of the absence. 

Immediate Family:  Students are eligible for up to three (3) days of excused absence for the death of a spouse,  significant other,  parent,  child,  grandparent,  grandchild or sibling,  or a corresponding in-law or step relative. 

Non-Immediate Family:  Students are eligible for up to one (1) day of excused absence for the death of an uncle,  aunt,  niece,  or nephew.  Students missing clinical,  SIM or V-SIM for a death in the family will be given an opportunity to make up time or have an alternate assignment.  Students missing more than 2 (two) scheduled clinical absences will need to meet with the Program Team Lead,  Clinical Coordinator,  and the primary Clinical Instructor to discuss options for make-up.  Each case of bereavement will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
