We believe that in accordance with the Texas Board of Nursing rules, the scope of practice defines the extent of the provision of care within each level of educational preparation. Texas Nursing Programs are to use the competencies outlined by the Texas Board of Nursing, to prepare curriculum and program frameworks for instruction. The guidelines, values, and ethical principles inherent to the nursing profession are as follows:
Altruism - Concern for the welfare of others seen through caring, commitment, and compassion
Human Dignity - Belief in the inherent worth and uniqueness of the individual seen through respect, empathy, humanness, and trust
Truth - Faithfulness to fact seen through honesty, accountability, and authenticity
Justice - Upholding moral and legal principles seen through courage, advocacy, and objectivity
Freedom - Capacity to exercise choice seen through openness, self-direction, and self-discipline
Equality - Having the same rights and privileges seen through acceptance, tolerance, and fairness
Esthetics - Identifying the qualities of objects, events, and persons that provide satisfaction as seen through creativity, sensitivity, and appreciation
