Each time a Circle takes on a new project, such as a new client, that project should become a subheading in that Circle's Asana space and a description of the project should be written in the description area. This allows the Board and other staff members to become familiar with the various current projects. The description should include a statement on how the activity advances our tax exempt purposes and mission. For any activities that have the potential to be considered unrelated business, the Legal Compliance Manager should be added as a follower or otherwise notified of this activity.
For example, each Circle may use a "What" and "Why" format for this:
What: The Land Circle has taken on _____ as a client and we are doing ____, ____, and ____.
Why: We took this client because we believe it will advance the Law Center's educational purposes by creating a unique replicable legal model that we can share with others…
OR
We took this client because it advances our charitable purposes of providing support to economically disadvantaged community members…
OR
We took this client because they can afford to pay market rate fees for legal services. Working with this client doesn't necessarily advance our tax exempt purposes, so we have notified the Legal Compliance Manager of the potential for this to bring unrelated business income.
For more information about recording information about clients specifically, see the Client Relations Policy.
