Week of October 3rd, 2022

Fatima T.

Downsview, for the week of October 3rd, it is a pleasure to announce that Fatima is your Student of the Week. Fatima is in the twelfth grade at Downsview.

Let’s get straight to the praise for Fatima. First off from her nominator, Mr. Lewin: “Fatima is a remarkable student and human being who has made invaluable contributions to the Downsview school community over the years. She is the current president of Downsview's SAC. In addition, she has played a leadership role in a number of important initiatives  that have  helped to create a positive, inclusive, caring, equitable school  culture. For example, Black Brilliance, TDSB African Heritage Month events , Truth and Reconciliation, Downsview's Steps program ,peer mentorship, etc. Fatima's humble and reflective nature has inspired many of her peers to utilize their immense talents and gifts to make a positive difference in the lives of others .

In addition, Fatima is an honor roll student who believes in the power of ongoing learning. She plans to attend  university and become a journalist. The sky is truly the limit for this remarkable leader who is committed  to achieving excellence and working with others to create a better world now and for future generations to come”.

And from Mr. Wallace: “Fatima is someone you want on your team. Her style of quiet, thoughtful leadership provides the foundation for so many good things at Downsview, whether it is the girls' soccer team or Black Brilliance, Student Council or supporting peers in class. But don't mistake her quietness for lack of passion. When she takes on a project she gives her whole self. She's all in! I have watched as those around her watch her transform into this powerful energy, bursting with intelligence and insight, that brings the truth. Their eyes go wide. Okay, then, they say, I see it is time to step up - look at Fatima go! Fatima doesn't have the corner on leading by example, but she shows the way. Keep it going, Fatima, you're awesome!”

Here this from Ms. Silvana: “You are a strong, quiet leader. What I appreciate about you is you are always trying to help others in need and model how to be a student who is inclusive and welcoming to all.  Fatima thanks for being you and making Downsview the school culture that it is”.

Ms. Persaud says: “In my brief encounters with Fatima, she has always exuded a kind and mature demeanour. Her commitment to student council proves she is a natural leader and it is no surprise that her peers elected her as Student Council President. Congratulations Fatima! I look forward to working with you through SAC initiatives”.

And lastly from Mr. Ramnaraine: “I had the pleasure of teaching Fatima in Gr. 10. She continues to be a kind, hardworking student and is always willing to lend a helping hand to her peers. I was so impressed to see her leadership skills in action during last year’s Black Brilliance conferences. She was simply amazing! Congratulations on this well deserved award Fatima!

Fatima, strength comes in many forms. Yours may be quieter, but there is no question that the self-reflection you have nurtured is paying dividends. We see your power. We see your strength. Congratulations, Fatima. You have earned the title: Student of the Week.
