Student of the Week

Each week, an amazing  student at Downsview Secondary School is awarded the Student of the Week award. The recipient is someone that displays leadership, collaboration and care for their school community.

Adyam H. & Ayla M.

Downsview, for the week of June 12th, it is an honour to celebrate two students as Students of the Week. They are Adyam H. and Ayla M. and they are both in the tenth grade.

Adyam and Ayla are our final recipients for the 2022-23 school year, and this placement is deliberate. Common advice is to start strong, stay strong and end strong. These two exercise their strengths consistently, without flagging, and they represent a rock-solid finale to Student of the Week honours.

Let’s start with this, from Ms Reid: “Adyam and Ayla are stellar examples of what academic excellence, strong work ethics, and taking accountability in learning look like. While each of their leadership postures are quiet and humbled in nature, together they are an incredible force to be reckoned with. Their effortless ability to build positive relationships with both students and staff has left an indelible mark in our school community and makes Downsview that much brighter. Congratulations to you both on this well deserved praise and recognition!"

Hear this, from Ms Lee: “It's no surprise to see that Adyam and Ayla have struck up a friendship. They both care about school and their community. This dynamic duo are smart, helpful and are a bright light here at Downsview. They help out in many ways at school, whether it's baking for fundraisers, making posters, supporting their peers or helping their teachers. I know I can count on them to help out in whatever way they can.

Ayla is a member of the Sisterhood. She has developed a great rapport with her "Sisters". I see her listening, sharing and supporting. In business class, she created the logo design for the CCEL SHEI benefits self care line! We have received so many compliments on the logo and branding. Thanks Alya!

Adyam is a student of mine and she is also a member of the Sisterhood and Truth + Reconciliation Crew. Adyam has high expectations and puts forth her best efforts in her work and contributions in her school work and her clubs.  Adyam submits her work on time and will take initiative to see where she can help out.

Ayla and Adyam, you are both incredible leaders in the school!  Continue to be true to who you are and know that you are valued! Congratulations!”

And, from Mr Lindsay: “Adyam and Ayla are a dynamic duo who are inseparable both in and outside of the classroom. They always bring a positive and cheerful energy to everything they do. Both are strong leaders who set an amazing example, academically and personally. I am privileged to have witnessed their growth and continued drive for excellence. Congratulations on winning Student of the Week.”

And Ms Sonia, also known as Ms Sunshine adds these words: “What can I say about Ayla, she is quiet as a mouse but don't let that fool you . She is a strong force in the making. She is a valuable member of the garden and art club. Continue your amazing path, and you will do amazing things, my dear.”

From Mr Syal: “Ayla is part of the Robotic Team. She was involved in everything. She learned how to drive the robot, build the robot, and program the robot.  At the tournaments she spoke with judges and mentors. She promoted her team to other teams. She is the future of Downsview. I am going to challenge her next year to step up to be a captain of the team.”

And from Ms Persaud: “It has been a pleasure working with both Adyam and Ayla. They have been committed members of the Student Council and are always willing to support initiatives.
