Biology
Level 3
None
Hey you, wanting to help people or work in any kind of caring, service or health-related field.
Why aren't you enrolled in Year 13 Biology already!?!!
IF YOU WANT TO GET INTO:
The airforce, be a vet, a vet nurse, work in a zoo, be a doctor, nurse, surgeon, physiotherapist, psychologist, researcher, lab assistant, geneticist, be a pharmacist, marine biologist, field researcher, work for DOC, or MAF, be on any of those border security shows, protect NZ forests, design environmentally-friendly architecture, work with food, plants, or viruses...
then YOU NEED to be taking NCEA BIOLOGY.
You can ALSO take Health, but medical healthcare fields need BIOLOGY to get into their training.
We start the year building on some things you have already learned last year in Genetic Variation - now learning about how humans manipulate genetic transfer in different species; either selective breeding, cloning or transgenesis!
Next we move on to our external content, all about how plants and animals are able to respond to their environments (where they live). We take our time with this and also do an internal investigation testing the growth of plants (such as mustard, alfalfa, beans for 4 credits) in the middle of it the external study, because the two topics have similarities.
At the end of term 2 those of you who love having opinions and ideas about everything will get to express your thoughts on a science issue affecting society at the moment (3 credits) - a much easier assessment than the Medical Marijuana Biological Validity Information from year 12!
The final internal is about homeostasis - now don't read that big word and panic! Homeostasis is all about how living things stay in balance inside their bodies, and what happens when that goes wrong (diabetes!).
The final exam of the year for you will again relate back to your Genetic Variation knowledge from year 12; how new species arise over time as their gene pools change!
