Te Reo Māori
Level 1
Year 9 and or 10 Junior Maori program or Primary entry criteria with an interview by the HOD of the department.
In this level 1 course students taking Te Reo Māori will develop essential skills in reading (whakarongo), writing (Tuhituhi) and speaking (Kōrero) Te Reo Māori at level 7 of the curriculum. There is a very strong focus on reading and writing comprehension, where students work towards strengthening their ability to interpret and translate familiar texts written in Te Reo Māori.
Students get to experience cultural aspects on the Marae and opportunities for hosting pōwhiri by welcoming visitors or manuwhiri. They are taught roles and responsibilities in hosting on the Marae as tangata whenua. This includes the opportunity to learn waiata and participate in kapahaka on a bi-annual basis or according to the procedure for BOT approval.
Students are able to gain a total of 30 credits at level 1 which include the required literacy credits.
By the end of this course it is expected that students will have the competency to read, write and speak in Te Reo Māori with a fluency at level 6 of the curriculum. This course enables students to be prepared for level 2.
