Blue Butterfly

8" x 12"

Graphite pencil, watercolor paint, gel pen, watercolor paper

What guided my artwork was that I had to make a piece that combined the art from an art movement and also an artist. I chose pointillism for my art movement which is included in the Modern Art Movement along with my other "isms". I chose this movement because it stood out to me how there were no brush strokes. It was point by point and you had to use other ways to ad demention and color change. The artist I chose was Kehinde Wiley who was famous for adding flowers in the back of their art pieces. I had never seen this before so I thought it was new and interesting.

This artwork was made using watercolor paper, a 2H pencil, a gel pen, and a paint pallet. I started out by sketching out my butterfly. Next, I used black paint and began using pointillism form. After, I used the blue paint. I wasnted the center to be much lighter than the outsidde. To do this I went around in a circle around the part I was dotting. Slowly, the paint would start running out on the paint brush, cuasing the paint ot get lighter. In addition to this I began spacing out each point that I made. After, I sketched out the flowers and began painting them. I wanted the blue in the butterfly to pop so I didn't use any blue for the flowers.

At the beginning of this project I wanted to do a picture of me skiing in pointillism and using Edgar Degas's thought of catching this action into a moment in a way. However, after looking at the image and what had to be done I revised into something that I could get done in time and something that I would be more proud of and come out more as I would hope. I chose a butterfly because I think they are pretty and have always loved them. Originally, I was still going with the same ideas of including Edgar Degas and pointillism, however, I realized that this artist maybe didn't match perfectly with what I was going for. I thought that flowers would go well with a butterfly, and remembered that Kehinde Wiley included flowers in the background or her paintings. Then he became my inspo for the rest of the drawing.
