Underglaze Squares

Underglaze Squares

I chose to do a nauticle theme because I thought I could give these slabs to my brother who lobsters. That's why I chose a lobster, and a buoy that was pink and black (those are the color of his buoys). I felt like it would be a cool thing to put on slabs and that they would fit the space well.

My process consisted of cutting out slabs of clay, creating design ideas for what I would then transfer onto the slabs. My ideas were a lobster trap, a lobster buoy, waves, and a whole lobster. My favorite ideas and sketches were the lobster and the lobster buoy so I began painting those sketches. After, I finished, I transferred them over onto the slabs of clay. Then they were fired, then I put a clear matte glaze over them.

The most challenging part of this project was finding underglazes that matched the colors that I wanted. The red I chose for the lobster at first was too orange and then I had to restart and find a red one. Also, the pink color I wanted for the buoy was alos challeneging to find. Overall, I feel like the end product colors were what I had invisioned in the beginning.
