Historical Coil Carve

The assignment we were told to complete was a historical coil carve. The way I took this assignment was I decided to create a bowl with "scars" that were inspired by an old sculptor. Looking at the bowl, I received the message that even with scars there is still beauty. That really inspired me to make something similar.

I created my bowl by using a coil technique. I created my coils and layered about 5 or so on top of each other, then smoothed them out. Once that was semi-dry I started to carve my "scars" out. And then when I started glazing, I did my full color. Once that was done I painted my other color in the carved-out areas.

The meaning of my bowl is that even when there are scars or broken pieces, you can still find beauty. I thought that this bowl really showed that message. And this is one of my favorite pieces I have created, for that reason.
