Meagan Kieffer

Meagan Kieffer went to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to get her Bachelor of Fine Arts - Ceramics and her Bachelor of Arts - English. She grew up on a ranch in South Dakota where horses we a part of her everyday life. This led to a lot of her artwork being inspired by animals but mainly horses. Meagan's artwork focuses on the bone structure, muscle tones, and the folds of skin and fat on the animals she is sculpting. Meagan chooses to sculpt working horses because you can see the muscle tone but also she wants to document the contribution these horses have had to progress and humanity. Meagan likes to use earthy colors and different shades of tan which I like. I like this because it helps show the detail of the animals and makes them look like they're made out of stone which gives them an older look.

Mel Griffin

Mel Griffin is an artist living in Montana. She loves being in Montana because she loves the community, trails, and most importantly the wildlife. Mel Griffin mainly focuses her ceramic work on wildlife that she sees where she lives. A lot of her artwork are ceramic tiles and wall panels that she sells in galleries and to the public. I really like Mel Griffin's style of art. I like how she carves the animals into tiles and then uses a pop of color to make them stand out. I also like how in each of her pieces she adds a fun twist to keep them interesting for example the polka dots in the background or the bear wearing a sweater.

Mel griffin and Meagan Kieffer are both artists that focus their ceramic work on nature and animals. But they each have different ways of portraying the animals. Mel Griffin likes to focus her work on lots of different animals while Meagan Kieffer likes to mainly focus on horses. Meagan Kieffer also likes to use a very neutral color pallet while Mel Griffin likes to add a pop of color mainly blue to a lot of her ceramic work.

For this project I decided to make a tile with a horse inscribed into it. I choose to do the tile because a lot of Mel Griffins work are tiles and I decided to inscribe a horse because Meagan Kieffer focuses her art work on horses and I really like how it turned out. When it came to choosing a glaze I was going for more of a lighter color blue like Mel Griffin uses on her work but we didn't have anything similar so I went with this darker color blue. Something that I wanted was for the glaze to go into the cracks and lighten up along the edges and that is what the glaze did. I think that looking back over the whole semester this was probably my most favorite project I did it was simple and I like that about it.
