Ceramics I

The project that I made in ceramics class that I'm most proud of is my black cup that I created using a new method which was soft slab construction. I am most proud of this cup because it was my best looking cup I made. It was smooth, level, and I really like what happened to the glaze around the edges because it made the cup look kind of old. When creating this cup I learned a new way to make cups and plates fast buy using a new method to me which was the soft slab construction. I also learned that working with clay is all about timing and knowing when the clay is the right amount of dry. I had to learn this fast because when I wanted to add a handle to my cup the clay couldn't be too wet because it would just fall over. So this project definitely taught me more about timing the clay and knowinging what state of clay is best to do what I want.

Taking ceramics has definitely showed me that creating things with clay is not as easy as I thought it was. When I thought about ceramics class I really only thought about making things with clay and not about the history or learning about other ceramics artists and how everyone's work is different. While making my ceramics creations it really made me think about and appreciate other people's work because now I know that it's not easy to make things out of clay that look really good. Now after this class when Im scrolling on the internet or out in stores I really notice all the art around me. Before ceramics I didn't really notice art as much but from taking this class it's made me really open my eyes to the art in the world around. While taking the class I would always be looking around to help me think of new ideas like texters I might want to try on a project and now that class is over I'm still looking around because you can find lots of interesting things if you just look around.

Overall ceramics class was very fun this semester even with dealing with Covid and the restrictions it put on class and how much time we had to work on our projects in class. Some recommendations I have that could improve this class would be trying to shorten the time in class where your introducing a new project. This is because during class when we were learning something new it felt like it took a while. And that didn't give us very much in class time to start using the new material we learned. One way that you could try to help with this is by introducing material on a video and having the students watch it at home so they have the whole class to work. this would really help especially because of Covid and how we don't have as many classes to work. Another recommendation I have is to introduce glazing as soon as students have things they can glaze because when we first started to glaze work I had a lot to glaze and not much time to do it. I feel like if glazing would be introduced a little bit earlier then students won't have to rush so much to get all their work glazed by the end of the semester.
