Tile

One project we worked on in ceramics this semester was creating tiles. My finished product is a blue tile with mountains carved out. I chose to carve out mountains because I read a book over the summer that talked a lot about mountains so I wanted to create what I thought the mountains might have looked like in the book.

To create this tile I used white clay, a carving tool, paintbrush, blue underglaze, and clear glaze on top. To make this tile I started with coming up with an idea of what I wanted to carve. Next, I took a ball of clay rolled it out so it was flat and to the thickness I wanted and used a stencil paper the size I wanted my tile to cut it out. Next, I used a blue underglaze to cover the top of the tile so I can carve into the clay. Once the underglaze was dry I sketched the mountains on the tile and carved them out. The last thing I did was put a shiny clear glaze on top which makes it look very nice and shiny now that it's finished.

I have never made a clay tile that I have carved into before but it was very fun. Making this tile was very interesting to me and I would definitely like to do this again. Over this semester in ceramics, this was probably my favorite thing I made because It's something I have never done before and it was interesting and made me be creative when coming up with what to carve on to it.
