Surrealism Collage

For this project we had to make a complex collage and then paint a replica of the collage. This project focused on being able to match colors that were on the collage as close as possible. At first I had no ideas for my collage and just chose images that I thought would make an interesting composition. I did not really think about having to paint my collage so when making my collage I chose very three-dimensional complex images. I wish I had thought more in terms of my strengths when making the collage since I struggle with three-dimensional painting. Once I put everything together I started to outline some of the basic shapes and then began painting. My collage contained a lot of browns and brownish shades. On many occasions I had trouble mixing the correct shade of brown. It took me a very long time to figure out the correct shade of brown. This was one of my biggest struggles.

On the bottom the cubic shapes were very hard and I could not get the shadows and highlight shades right so they sort of blended in the background shade. When I started painting the letters I tried to stick with the same fonts that were on the original collage. Some of the paint clumped in weird places and almost gave a chunky texture to some of the letters. I think I did a good job using the patterns of the fonts though. Also, I like my composition because the colors and the shapes created a balance.

In the end I wish I had chosen images that were not so geometrical and cubic, but I like my idea of the collage. I wish I had maybe spent a little bit more time on the bottom and kept trying to perfect the cubical shapes instead of just leaving it as is. In the end I wish I had a bit more time to do my best work and managed my time better.
