Cropped Self-portrait

Hand in interesting position

Object used everyday

When I first started drawing my time capsule drawings I made the decision to start with the cropped self portrait because I knew that would be the hardest one of the three I had to do. I moved the mirror around until I was happy with the angle. I drew the top half of the right side of my face. Next I did the object I use everyday. I made the decision to draw my water-bottle because I am a runner. Because of this I use my water-bottle constantly and I rely on it to stay healthy and hydrated. Lastly, I drew my hand in and visually interesting position. I do not really know why I did the peace sign, it was the first thing that came to mind. I guess it’s because I use it a lot on a day to day basis and it was just a natural instinct. For the object I use everyday I chose to draw a water-bottle. This is because I am a runner and of course when running you have to drink a lot of water. I use my water-bottle constantly and thought it would be the perfect focus object. I made my hand in a peace sign because I guess I make a peace sign with my hand a fair amount. This idea kind os came to me naturally. I chose the area of my face I did because I thought it would make visually interesting drawing.

For the cropped self-portrait I used a 2B pencil, 4B pencil and some charcoal in certain areas to try to make them slightly more dimensional. I used these materials because I wanted to create shadows and shade effectively to make the objects look more realistic. For the other two drawings I just used a 2B pencil and tried to create a nice range of value.

I started off just trying to find the area of my face I wanted to focus on for my cropped portrait. I drew a few different areas of my face very lightly and decided which angles and area I thought would make the best drawing. For the drawing of my water-bottle I started off by just drawing a rough outline to see if I actually wanted to draw my water-bottle. I ended up liking the looks of it, but thought it looked somewhat dimensional so I shaded it until it sort of gave off a 3D effect. Finally, for the drawing of my hand I started off with my fingers and just tried to get the outline then slowly add the lines, wrinkles and shading as I went on. All of my drawing were very plain and did not look realistic at all when I finished the main outline of each of them. I really started to focus and the values in each of the drawings to try and give them more of a realistic effect. Also, for my cropped self-portrait I went from just using graphite to also adding charcoal in places. My next steps could be adding more details to make each of my drawings more realistic and complex. Also, I feel like I could add a color in some places to make my artwork more visually interesting and less plain. Lastly, I think that I probably could shade everything a little darker because I feel like all my drawings all still contain a lot of white spaces.
