Elements & Principles of design

The two panels I decided to select from were my balance and texture sketch and unity and shape. I chose these two panels because I thought they were the most visually interesting and composed. The rest of them were not as strong. For texture I drew something that looked like burrs and placed them around the square to balance it out and in some places I broke the borders to create even more of a balance. For my second composition I used shape and unity by using different shapes to create a face. I started off using only primary colors, but then added secondary colors where the shapes intersected. I chose to make this because the first thing that came to mind when I thought of texture was sort of a spiked texture. Then for shapes I was inspired by orphism to use a variety of shapes to form an abstract looking face. I chose to unify these two compositions by using primary colors on both.

I used pencil to sort of sketch everything out then I traced over most things with gel pen to clean up some lines and make it look more uniformed and defined. Then I used colored pencil for the rest if the drawing. I used the colored pencils on the background for the first composition. On the second composition I used colored pencils and a black colored pencil for the background.

On the thumbnail sketches I sort of just drew the first things that came to mind. Then when I chose the two compositions I drew the shapes and unity composition first. I sort of just used shapes that I thought could represent certain features on the face and added extra shapes to unify the shapes more. I decided to unify the two compositions through color. Specifically primary colors. For the background of the second composition I decided to do the background black to create emphasis and make the colorful shapes pop against the dark. At first the sketches were very rough and were less complex than my final drawings. In the first composition I added more spiked circles and tried to use a variety of sizes to help balance it out. Also, in my original sketch I did not have a background, but I added one in my final draft. The background was what unified the two drawings. In the second composition I only had a few shapes, but I added more. Then I added a black background to create emphasis on the shapes and primary colors.

I think my next steps could be touching everything up a little. Some of the borders are a little messy and I think I should’ve been more careful when drawing. Also, I think I could probably find more ways to unify the two compositions because they still look sort of separate.
