At first I struggled with finding references that I could use. I experimented with the positioning of the duck and sort of its mannerism until I found what I wanted to do for how the duck was positioned. I did the thumbnail sketches and them after that I chose one of them to go off of loosely. I outlined the duck very lightly and tweaked it as need be in some places to try and make its form look more natural, but I struggled with this. So I started off with wanting to do a duck more off to the side and then more of its surrounding environment in the image, but then I changed my mind and just wanted the duck to be the primary focus. Because of the background being a little plain I wanted to use brighter colors to emphasize it more. Also, I was going to have the duck doing some kind of movement and then show that by the ripples in the water, but I decided to just depict the ripples in the water, I am not really sure why.
Some of my next steps could be going over the water and basically the whole background and giving it more of a deeper value. I would do this by using different colored pencils to burnish a little bit more in some places. I think that would make the background more visually interesting and give some contrast to the duck which turned out a little lighter than I expected. Also, I think I could add more details that pertain to the environment the duck is in just to add some more detail.
For this project I chose to do the Ruddy duck to depict in my drawing. I chose this duck because I liked that it looked like a traditional duck, but it has a blue beak which is different and I liked it. I knew I only wanted to draw one duck so the focus would be on it exclusively. Now I wish I added a few more aspects to make the composition more interesting. To be honest I was not sure what duck I wanted to choose so I jus looked them all up and chose the one that I liked best which was the Ruddy duck. for the background I did not want to have sky in it, just water. Also, I wanted to try and capture the movement of the water so it could also relate to the movement of the duck.
I knew I wanted to use colored pencils because I wanted the colors to be light in some places, but also rich in others. I have become most comfortable with colored pencils so I thought it would be the best choice for this project. Also, I used pencil to create an outline, but other than that I used colored pencils for everything else.
