Sgraffito tile

Artist Statement

For this project I created a clay sgraffito tile. A sgraffito tile is when you take a slab of clay and glaze it and then carve into it creating a design. For my design I decided to make a tarot like design. There were a couple of changes that happened through out the process.

At first when I first started the process of laying out the clay I started with a technique where you throw the clay diagonally onto the table to flatten out the clay. However I struggled to do it, this causing me to just lay out the clay and flatten it with a pin roller. I had a designed layed out to make a rectangular tile with a tarot-like design, but when I had fully flattened out the clay I changed the idea of making a rectangular shaped slab, and made a more unique shape with the slab which caused a couple of design changes when I carved it. Like the perimeter designs.
