Artist Statement

In this project I was given the prompt to make a pot inspired by a modern contemporary artist, I chose Stuart Gair for this project because He brought futuristic style pottery into a basic classical style of pottery which I really liked about his art. In the project I had complete freedom to do basically whatever style of ceramics I wanted to, but with using a maximum of 3 lbs of clay.

In this project I decided to take more of a blast to the past and go back to using the pinch pot technique that I first learned at the start of the year. Using this technique I made two different pinch pots and scratch and scored them together with a coil in between to make a more secure connection. I then cut out the shape for the lid and added just a dot of clay on the top to make a handle for the lid. I then made a triangular spout for the pot that was similar to many of the futuristic additions Stuart Gair's works. After I did the lid and the spout I then used the pulled handle technique to make the handle. After I attached the handle it was then time for the bisque fire and the glazing. For the glazing I kept it simple, using a matte white glaz for the outside and then I just coated the inside and the handle to the lid with a turquoise glaze. And that led to the final project being a sort of classic yet slightly futuristic looking tea pot
