slab mug summative

For our slab mug/cup summative we were told to create a mug using a the slab technique. In order to get a neat and flat slab we use this press machine which flattens the clay to a certain thickness. For my summative mug, which was our first mug; I didn't really have any specific idea. I just went into it. I created a slab and then pressed whatever pattern I wanted into the clay before trimming it down. I used a ruler to give a line texture look, which was probably not my best idea since it didn't come out looking as well as I had planned it to. After I finished my pattern I measured about 5 1/2 inches vertical and about 11 inches symmetrical which I ended up trimming down. The materials I used in order to get my finished product was clay, wooden tools, exacto knife, ruler, and glaze.

For this project I definitely think the strongest part was the processes leading up to my design. The shape, heights, and overall size of the mug/cup is really good but I really don't care for the design or textures I added to the cup. If I could change my design I probably would have just used the floral imprint, I tried it first and It actually came out really cool looking; I wish I would have kept it.

I used 3 different glazes in order to fulfill the finished product. You can see a lot of the texture and value on the mug especially once the different colors of glaze were added onto the mug itself.
